Don't forget the "internet factor". Just because tons of people on the interenet claim they shoot .5 moa groups with their bushmaster doesn't mean that is the case. From the looks of it your groups could tighten up a bit, but don't expect to be drilling one hole at 100 yards. IMHO 4 inch 10 shot groups at 100 yards with an m4gery using iron sights is more than acceptable.

O.K. guy, here we go

The third time out with a new rifle—your doing good-- don’t expect to be perfect all at once. Hasn’t anyone told you it might take a little practice..

Wind—no change—no change or you didn’t notice any change- were you watching before each shot? Pick up a couple wing flags better yet make some—watch them before you shoot

Cleaning – after each day of shooting = good- but don’t clean it to death

Notes—take lots of notes if you want to improve. Temperature, wind- direction and speed, light –where is the sun, cloudy- overcast -bright -rolling clouds –color of tint to your glasses, no glasses, what did you have to eat or drink, POA vs POI point of aim( where you know it will hit) vs where it does hit. If there are clouds and they are moving, your eye sees the front sight differently sort of like the way we view the moon.

Food and drink-- keep hydrated this is very important with function of the body and eye

Chipmunk cheek – mold you face to the stock of the rifle—when you apply your face to the stock your cheek will roll over the stock and look like a chipmunk with a mouth full of food. This is caused by an over and down motion of your head. Make sure it is in the same place every shot. Not forward, not back, the same place. Add a pc of tape to the stock- this is where your face goes.

Ear plugs – we missed this one – very very important—for some reason your head doesn’t pick up flinching or yanking the trigger for a long time even with training or you have someone watching for it. Make a short film and watch it in slow motion – not to slow – watch your eyes, hand, finger, the rifle barrel for movement.

If you want to be more than just a plinker of sort, which is fine ) this July come to Camp Perry Ohio( on the lake). The CMP matches. Sign up for the SAFS classes and learn to shoot this wonderful rifle right. You get to work with military experts; they give you a rifle, ammo, shirt, pins, schooling, rule books, all in one weekend and its all for $40.00. You can’t beat that. Hope to see you there

Do you like to shoot behind the rifle or beside the rifle? Big difference, not that one is better, but different.

Keep shooting – have fun – try to get better- take notes and find out what works for you and what doesn’t. –With that rifle don’t limit your self to just 100 yards. Move it out to 2 to 4 times that- yes with open sights, but get the right targets. FYI 50 yards with that rifle is like shooting across the room. Fun but limited challange.

Be safe have fun keep shooting :D

Well covey, took out my Bushmaster carbine in part because of this thread and I needed to sight it in.

First photo is the last time I test fired it,as you can see it was shooting waaaaayyyyy! high but did a nice group with the Winchester USA ammo.

Well good new is I got it shooting in the black today, used a front sight tool to adjust it.But my groups today were less than stellar. Each target is done with changes on the sights except the photo with the double targets,I shot groups without messing with sights on those. Now,the bulls on those SR1 targets is 6 inches. It was around 2 to 3pm when I shot those targets and the sun did start playing with me.

Seeing what I did with the winchester ammo and seeing what I did with the Federal value pack ammo and the wide groups with Federal I'm not sure if it is me or maybe the ammo.Happy that it is in the black now anyway but....

I'll have to get different ammo, and shoot earlier in the day when the sun isn't so bright and see what is what.Guess I should try my HBAR also and see if I do better with that because I have barely shot the HBAR in a while also.If I do poorly next time with the HBAR then I know it is me who has lost the ability to shoot a AR well because in the past I have done real good with the HBAR.I dunno,I may just need to practice up and reuse to the AR.

I shot the SP1 AR today also and it shot about as good as the Bushmaster so it seems because when I shot the SP1 I accidently shot the same target that I had just done with the Bushmaster so the holes were all mixed together.Since I have double targets that I was shooting at the upper may be off because of me shifting to adjust to shoot the higher target, because the hits of the upper target seem to group in general lower than the bottom target.

Oh and those hits on the cardboard are from another time and another gun....

Cool report Lionking. I will be heading out again tomorrow. I have a new rest and some different ammo to try. We'll see what happens.

Covey I tried my Bushmaster again today.Tried S&B ammo and the Federal again.I was starting to think the Federal just didn't shoot well but after today I realized it is me that just needs to practice with a AR more.

The Federal did (or I did with it) much better today.Still not the best of what I should be able to do but hopefully the more I shoot the Bushmaster the better I'll get.

Funny that I seem to shoot better with other rifle designs, the AR is suppose to be a easier rifle to shoot, and I have done better in the past.Guess I need to stop switching guns all the time and dedicate myself to alot of AR firing.

That's not bad for iron sights. Heck, one day I was at the range and this guy sits down at the next lane with a fancy bull barrel AR-15 with a huge scope. He proceeded to blast away, and I just had to take a look through my spotting scope at his target. His groups were probably twice as big as yours.

thanks alemonkey.I'm hopefully getting better.I might go out again tomorrow with my 20" Hbar and see what I can do with it.The group I posted with the Winchester USA ammo, that is what I use to consistantly do with a AR.Wish I could find more of that ammo.

Today I focused on trigger control, and as I did the more I seemed to close the groups.I am finding that instead of slowly letting the trigger click forward I am doing better by letting it go all the way forward and squeezing the trigger in same fashion.I think the last couple times out I was slowly letting it forward for the "click" and I wasn't squeezing consistantly.

Also maybe because today was a bright sunny day,my front sight focus was a little better and I kept my other eye more open also. These days I find as I focus on the font sight I start squinting,as I think I wa trying to hard.

I dunno, all I can do is keep shooting it and see if I keep improving.Last time out when I saw my targets I exclaimed "***?"My goal is to consistantly keep 10 shots in the 10 ring.

I haven't read through the posts, but what I suggest is learning to shoot with a 6 o'clock hold if shooting for X ring or groups at under 300 yards.

This will improve the consistency of your sight alignment. Also just focus on the front sight. Rear sand bag helps as well, but the 6 o'clock hold on a Black Ring Target is the key for me at least.

I am going to shoot at 100 yards tomorrow if not windy. I will post the targets I use if I do.

like eb1 said, you have to focus on the front sight post. the target should be a blur. in addition to that, breath control and trigger control will fix your problem. all these factors are the same regardless of whether you are shooting from a bench or not. if you are shooting really high make sure you have the right height front sight post. i had this problem on my first AR, the FSP was too short so all my rounds went high.

Well feeling the need to get back in the groove with AR-15's I went back out today. At 42 years old,my eye sight has gotten squinty a bit but not that bad, although focus on front sights with the floaters in my eyes is sometimes bothersome.

I can tell you any reservations I had about the Federal value ammo is put to rest,it was me not shooting right, the ammo is fine.Today I used the Colt HBAR and Bushmaster carbine again, and while at first my groups were still too wide I'm starting to get it together again like I use to be able I think.I'm seeing improvement anyway,

I after reading comments used the cheekhold recomended, which is my lip touching the charging handle everytime and it helped,I was more consistant.I think shooting mausers and different types I forgot how to dig in with the AR with consistant repeated practices.

Here is what I did right off the bat with the Bushmaster,as you can see except for one way off with practice it seems I'm getting the hits into the 10 ring which is my goal.Seeing my last target from yesterday,I clicked up 2 on elevation and 1 right on windage and it seems spot on now for Federal ammo.Firing was done rested while shouldered.

And with the HBAR,the results from today, not as good as it should be,but I think I'm going to be getting better.Had to make some minor sight adjustments between the targets,in the end at target #3 it is shooting pretty much center mass.I used the peep sights, not the red dot.

lol I'm always looking for a reason to include them when I photo my guns or targets.Since I don't use them like my guns,I like to include them for the sake of the fact that I collect them as accessories to many of the military rifles I have.Which is funny bevause my Hbar is actually a transition when they didn't include lugs on the rifle but before the actual ban,got to love political correctness.

Which starting a bayonet thread in the blade section might be a cool thing hmmm?:p
