AR-15 Range Report (pics)

I went to the range again today. I got some new ammo that i wanted to try. I also got some tips from this site and other sites on how to improve my groups. I am doing better each time i shoot. Today was 100 yards open sights. (i know some people say that 100 yards with an AR is a waste of ammo, but i want to be accurate at 100 yards before i move out to 200.)

Conditions-About 40 degrees. There was a very slight breeze at times that seemed to kinda swirl.

Here are some of the new things i tried today.

1. I put a small dab of white out on the tip of my front sight post.

2. I mostly used official 100 yards NRA Military rifle targets.

3. I changed the position of my trigger finger. I now squeeze the trigger with the tip of my finger about a half inch in.

4. I tried to control my breathing better.

5. I also moved my cheek anchor point closer to the charging handle.

Thanks to everyone who has been helping me. I should be receiving my 200 yard targets soon. I will post those results when i get back to the range.

Here is the setup. I used a front rest only. I rested the rear of the gun while i was taking breaks.

100 yards with PRVI Partizan 55 grain SP


100 yards with Remington 55 grain FMJ

actually, that's excellent shooting! i'd be very surprised if you could do much better with that ammo.

if you're shooting that well with crappy (but expensive!) mil reject ammo, you should definitely buy a box of something good like black hills 69 grain or federal gold medal match. i'd bet your groups would be half that size.

Yes, I really like the NRA military rifle targets.

No i wasnt. But i was trying different things like anchoring my cheek in different spots. Plus i think after shooting for awhile, i started to jerk a little bit.

I bought this gun in early January(my first AR) so i am still pretty new to it but i am learning with some help from people on this forum. Thanks for all your help and please feel free to throw out any tips u can.

I just bought some of this stuff, shot really well but i didnt gather any pictures. Ill go out soon again, and snap some pics. Looks like it will be very accurate stuff for the price:

Just for fun try a target that is half the size. I have noticed that the smaller my aiming point is the tighter my groups get.

That is really good, and people gave you some great advise. I found this website to teach my brother how to shoot an AR. It is the same thing that I was taught in the Army and it really works(I used to have a little book from the Army but I lost it) Anyway, this helped him out a lot and it might help you or someone.

MAKE SURE YOUR WEAPON IS UNLOADED!!!!
In addition, a great way to improve trigger control is to put one of the pieces of a cleaning rod in the end of the barrel. Then put a dime on the end of it. squeeze the trigger, and try to make the dime stay on the rod. (If your really good you will be able to pull the charging handle back and repeat) Oh, by the way, be in the prone or kneeling position and unsupported.

If you don't mind my saying (somewhat off the subject) but that looks like a nice range you were shooting on. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have such a nice place to shoot. Be thankful that you do.

Good shooting! As you see, when you change your cheek weld on the stock the point of impact can change. For consistency you can touch the tip of your nose to the charging handle (some folks do not me) or place two fingers right behind the charging handle touch your nose to the fingers then remove your fingers while maintaining your position on the stock. I do this over and over until you don't have to measure with the fingers anymore. This ensures you are looking through the rear sight the same everytime.

And remember, your face needs to be in the same place even when you shoot from different positons.

Hey that's a great start!

Don't be ashamed you are "only" shooting at 100y. The only range close to me that I can regularly shoot at is 25y. I just have to try for smaller groups.

That last target is a really nice group. 100 yards with open sights 16" barrell and cheap ammo... I'd be proud of that.

I generally shoot 55gr Prvi Partizan and it actually preforms pretty darn well.

Thanks and i am thankful. Its a private club that costs $214 for the year. The picture above is the 200 yard range. We also have a 300 yard range, outdoor pistol range, 24/7 indoor pistol range, Several trap shooting ranges, (5) 75 yard pits that you can shoot anything except centerfire rifles in, and a nice archery range.

I have only had it for about 5 to 6 weeks but i havent had any problems. I have been to the range about 5 times with it.

ya, i figured, i just had to ask though.

ive only owned colt and bushmasters.

bushmaster makes one fantastic rifle, and in my opinion, the best barrels anywhere for the money.
