A buddy needed to some money and he had a Gen 3 G-17 for sale.

The stock sights are pretty terrible so I ordered some Hi-Viz sights.

Usually I put Apex triggers in my Glocks but I had wanted to try a Lightning Tap Double Action Trigger. I got in touch with them via facebook and learned that COVID had delayed their production. They did have a short pull-short reset in production so being in the mood to try something new, I figured I would give one a try. They sent me to the recoilstore.com and bought it for a hundred and ten bucks.

After installing it I took it and a 19 with an Apex, to the range

They claim 4 lb pull and a 3mm reset. It took a while to get used to only letting the trigger go forward so little but once I got used to it. I can shoot the Lightning Tap faster. I was Jerry Miculek...well...in my mind I was.

In addition, my accuracy improved. That said, I can't promise whether it was the trigger or the bigger grip on the 17. My guess is that the faster reset was helping me, after all, I was using extended mags on the 19, coming close to replicating the grip of a 17...but can't say for sure.

I guess in order to do a true comparison I should install it in a 19 so that I can be true apples to apples. Still, I have got to say...I am a convert.

Now, if my hi-viz sights will come in, I will have my tupperware set up

Hoping to shoot a match next weekend and I will let some better shooters play with it and report what they say.

I put an Apex on my 17L because the stock trigger left the safety blade sticking out a touch when the trigger was being pulled and it felt awful compared to the ones on my 19 and 34 that sit flush when compressed. I like theSpex, it feels much better than stock and the pull is really smooth.

The Apex is rather flat, does the trigger you have a similar profile? If so I may look into one for the 19. (The 34 is a duty gun so I can’t alter it from stock.) If you have a pic that would be great.

Thanks!

Stay safe.

With regard to short-reset triggers, what are thoughts on whether this feature is applicable to combat/self-defense/personal protection incidents? We don't know specifically how a person will perform under stress, but I wonder how practical it is to expect them to perform to use a short-reset trigger effectively. Is this something that flatters a user in practice the way it made you feel like Jerry Miculek, or is this actually likely to improve performance in lethal-force encounters?

while I am not an expert, my guess is that it comes down to training.

under stress the fine motor skill go away. (this I know)

my thought, and I am open to contrary view, that the trigger having a greater range to make the gun go "bang" is a good thing. Even if, under stress, one doesn't "take advantage" of the short reset by letting the trigger return too far forward...it still goes "bang".
But if one is "clenching" the short reset is a good thing.

Plus, if, under stress, the finger gets too far into the guard, the short pull is making the "bang" happen before the gun is pulled too far askew of the target.

As to this particular trigger, the Lightning Tap...I am no BJ Norris...but the person I was with said that they could tell that my rate of fire had improved and the paint gone from the steel showed that my accuracy had improved too.

How much of that was because of the larger grip of the 17 over the 19 (with extended mag)? I really can't say.

Follow up

My buddy shot the G-17 with the Lightning Tap trigger.

His evaluation is that it is exceptionally crisp
Didn't effect his accuracy like it did mine...but he felt more consistent (he is a better shooter than I am)
his splits were shorter with the Lightning Tap over his Zev Fulcrum

He too is a fan.

how safe is the apex and is the striker spring strong enough for consistent ignition of primers.

I like my Apex, and I’ve never had a FTF or FTE in the 17L. The trigger is really crisp, and 5 pulls on my Lyman trigger gauge showed an average of 4lb. 5oz.

Stay safe.
