A friend of mine sold his Beretta :)rolleyes: ) and had just bought a box of Ranger SXT frangible ammo at the last gun show. He asked if I wanted it so I went over to check it out. On the box it says "+p", "frangible" and "For Law Enforcement Use" on it. He gave $20 for it and that's what he's asking for it.

Is it okay to own it, can you carry it, what does frangible mean and how good would it be for self defense?

Frangible bullets smash to powder on a hard target. They are usually used for training at close range so spatter of bullet fragments from a bullet trap or steel plate target won't be a hazard.
They wouldn't do an assailant any good, but might be rather unpredictable on penetration. I have some Triton frangible hollowpoints. Fired against steel, they powder. Fired into water, the nose powders to the bottom of the cavity and the base keeps going. I think I'd rather have regular hollowpoints for gunfighting.

+P Frangibles are probably not used for just training.
These rounds have application in trailer parks and apartements where other families/people maybe on the other side of a thin wall, or in an aircraft.
Outside of those kinds of situations, you are better served with heavy for caliber loads.
They are more reliable in cycling an automatic and they penetrate better. Shot placement mixed with deep penetration makes your bullets magic... not some wonderslug hyped in a magazine. "FOR LEO USE ONLY" or not.
