I have a RCBS hand primer and right now I hate the darn thing. When I am priming the top lid moves enough that the primers flip over during the priming process. I tried putting a piece of painters tape around the top and bottom of the primer holder as close as I can so, I can still see the primers going into the tool. It works better but , I still get enough flipped primers to piss me off. It really slows this process down. Anyone have other recommendations on a better fix or better priming method or tools. thanks

I have the Lee hand priming tool.

It's ok but it sucked that it uses special shell holders. It also is a little "quirky" in that the handle will come apart if you're not careful.

Once I got past those things I actually like it. It works well once you get used to it and get the feel for how hard to squeeze.

I also have the RCBS hand primer. it gets frustrating and tires my hand out after a limited time. Most of my operations have switched to a progressive press now. but I did work with the RCBS press mounted priming system and found it better on the hands than the hand primer - but a tad slower. It also tied me to the press rather than sitting with a bucket of brass and primers in front of the TV.

If the tray and/or feeder are worn and loose. I'd be willing to bet RCBS will make it right. Their customer service is fantastic. Or at least it has been for me.

Best solution right here and inexpensive:

I have both the Old and New RCBS Handheld Primer. The old one is pretty sensitive, the New one is pretty solid.

This is the Universal Primer from RCBS, it does not need shell holders. It has a Small & Large blocks (White is Small, Black is for Large) to use for Small or Large Bullet priming.

I have the two RCBS hand priming tools with the universal shell holder, one each set up for each size primer. I never have a problem with flipped primers.

I did remove the slide gate that is supposed to be used to turn off the primer feed.

Also, the trays and feed chutes are primer size specific.

I had it happen to me a couple times, but then I lubed the innards and the problem went away. It's telling you it's dry.

I have a RCBS and a Hornady. Of the two, I use the RCBS more. It takes some dexterity to assemble and operate, but once I got the hang of it, I can move on. When it gets low on primers, a soft rap on the wood bench top makes them enter the chamber.
Also, Winchester primers are oriented in their package so that I can place the tray upside down over the package, flip it over, and all the primers are right side up.

I have the old Lee round trays, very rarely flips a primer, the "New improved" one does not do as well.,
You can either check every primer before inserting the case or just sort out the few that end up upside down. (much faster if doing 1000 cases....)

The RCBS universal hand prime tool is by far the easiest tool I have ever used by far.Consistently excellent results and no hand fatigue with arthritic hand joints.

Amen, beats the old one from RCBS "Hands Down"

Thanks for the insight. I need to get the system down I like the binder clip idea. I've had the Rock Chucker Supreme kit for about 2-3 years and I've been reloading for less than a year so, I am still feeling my way around. I have successfully loaded 45acp and 556 and I have fine tuned the right loads for each so, really I just started loading in bulk and this primer system is not cooperating. Just wanted to see what is out there and if others were having the same issue. The kit like I said is about 2-3 years old so, I don't know if I have the new or older priming tool.

If you have to use Shell Holders to prime, you have the older one. If you have 2 size adjusters, White (Small) and Black (Large), you have the newer one.

Good Luck

Interesting, mine is harder on my hands than the old one. I wonder if something is different about it. Have they made any changes on them? I'm going to give mine away there is such a big difference.

Ah, not sure what I was thinking, I have the universal CCI primer strip type primer. I wonder what the difference is, but it is very hard on my hands.

I still use the old RCBS priming tool - like the one njsportsman has, but without the primer tray or feeder. I drop an individual primer into the cup prior to inserting the case in the shell holder. Works well for me. If I have a primer go in upside down or sideways, I know exactly who to blame.

Tried it. Didn't care for it. Went back to my old RCBS one-at-a-time tool.

I would have stayed with the old Lee hand priming tool (the one that used the threaded shell holders), but I can't get shell holders for all the calibers I load for today.

Dan, First thank you for your service and sacrifice for our country. I have the one where you need the shell holder. I think I just need to use it more which I am. I think if I can get the tray tight enough or find the right way to hold so that the primers don't flip.

Couldn't possibly be because you're getting olderI;) have the APS strip primer too, all hand primers are hard on my overused hands, but thankfully I don't use it exclusively now......I really really like the bench version of the APS strip primer....effortless, safe, no primers to dump or spill. I bought the bench primer when the APS strip-using Pro 2000 progressive was discontinued.... Thinking was..... don't want to be limited by a newer press with only the more dangerous tube-fed option. I tube-d for years on a Rock Chucker, and I don't ever want to risk that again. Many never have a problem, but the older, more experienced, and complacent I get, the more often stupid creeps in. Want to keep all my digits and both my eyes.

I love the bench version....so much easier on the hands.....yes carpal tunnel and arthritis is a real nuisance now. 68 next month.....:uhoh: pray for me!:D
On sale at midway right now....$14.00 off.

Now waiting for a "universal" version.....or upgrade kit. (non APS already has that)

I used the old style for years, when it broke I upgraded to the Universal, I really like it, have since gotten repair parts (Free) from RCBS, and fixed the old one (So I could park it). If you have issues with the one you have, I would really recommend the Universal. No Shell Holders, only Small or Large selections. It works really well for me.

p.s. I have the 2 mentioned as well as the Lee Hand Primer with the funny looking shell holders too. I still prefer the Universal.
