Now that NEF is making their HandiMag rifles, does anyone know if it would be possible to re-chamber the 300 WinMag into 300 H&H Mag? How much would such an operation be likely to cost?

Please don't ask me why I want to do this, because I don't have a good answer other than "I like old British sporting cartridges," "The T/C Encore costs too much," and "I want one."

It is not possible -- the two cartridges have the same head size, but .300 WM is almost straight sided, while the .300 H&H is quite tapered. This means a short distance forward from the breech, the .300 WM chamber is wider than the .300 H&H. Running in a .300 H&H reamer will not "clean up" that wider portion of the chamber.

I would also be worried about the strength of the lock-up mechanism-the NEF handi-rifle is a strong action, but there have been multiple reports of the new 500 S&W ones coming unlocked from the recoil.

I believe the 300 H&H Magnum has a lower max pressure than even the .30-06. Which, I suppose leads me to my next question... Is there another chambering like .30-06 that would work? Maybe I'm just dreaming...

30-06 will not work for the same reasons described that the 300H&H will not work; it is smaller dimensions. The only way you can re-chamber is by increasing on dimensions.

What exactly are you aiming for here? I'd say just keep the 300Win, as you have a heck of a good chambering right there. You can already load down to 30-06 levels.

I heard about these guns opening from 500SW, but when I watched the videos it was like it was opening after the round was fired and not relieving any pressure. I'd want to look into that one though.

The 300 wm and the 300 H&H are one in the same. The advantage is with the 300 H&H in that it's more efficient with powder because of case design. Just check your Speer reloading manual and you'll see what I mean.

The 300 wm was Winchester's way of replicating the performance of the 300 H&H in a shorter action. The shorter action allowed Winchester to produce the rifle at a lower price, becoming competive with the Remington 700. We all know the pre and post 64 story.

The 300 wm is not more powerful than the 300 H&H. The 300 H&H was never upgraded to keep pace with the 300 wm, allowing folks to believe that Winchester had brought out a more powerful cartridge. The 300 H&H is a reloaders dream. Not many cartridges are as versitile as the H&H with light weight bullets. That long neck stablizes bullets of all weights. Here's a load I picked up from Coddington-- 150 gr bullet with 74 gr of 4350 @ 3400 fps. -- I load the 180 gr bt @ 3100 fps.

Something else, if you run short of 300 wby, the 300 H&H will work.

If you want a 300 H&H rifle it may be more cost effective to look for a good used one and leave the 300 wm as it is. -- :)

Just download the .300 win to .300 H&H levels and there you go.

Maybe they'll offer the barrel accessory program for the SB3 action soon. Then you could perhaps get a smaller caliber heavy barrel that can reamed out for the 300 H&H. By then though it might just be cheaper to get an Encore. I think it's a neat idea because of what you want to do with it. Best of luck in your low cost .300 H&H quest.
