So I posted earlier that we found a can of 30-06 ammo in a sealed can. Today the find's got better.
m1903 springfield w/ m82 scope in pretty good shape (scope has some rust but the action looks great and the bore has only slight rust and lots of lint for some reason)
m1 Garand my father in law got in the korean war (bore is rusted pretty good, woods great and some surface rust)
Ithaca m37 12ga riot gun that has definitely seen better days, it's pretty rusty but cycles smooth as can be, even if it is ugly.
Ithaca m37 16ga that is also fairly rusted.
I have already started cleaning the 1903 as it will be the easiest, just cleaning like a regular rifle. The m1 I covered in gun oil and with the shape of the barrel I'm thinking it will see a gunsmith to "restore" it to the point of shootable.
Is there anything I should be looking for on the 1903? I know it's a late model so it had the proper heat treatment. Can I fire regular hunting ammo in it?
And although the shotguns probably belong in the shotgun forum, how do I clean those up? They are VERY rusted. I was thinking of taking the wood off and putting them in a shallow tub of diesel and letting it work the rust off over a few days. I don't want them pristine, I do want them to stop returning to the earth. Would that be a safe way to clean them up?
