Like the 1911, the BHP's firing pin is an inertia type, shorter than its channel in the slide, and will not reach the primer until struck a blow by the hammer. It will not touch the primer when the hammer is lowered manually.

Depending on the year, there may be an internal firing pin stop that requires the trigger to be pulled to disengage and allow the firing pin to advance.
