Reading about guns, is it okay?

Couple years ago I did time in both Japan and China( Beijing) and had some gun rags with me for the flights and train rides. Never got a second glance.

This is 100% true. A lot of people talking out their asses in this thread. You can find gun and military hardware magazines for sale in every sidewalk kiosk in Beijing. There are even "tactical" stores which sell everything *except* guns, like red dot sights, scopes, knives, binoculars, and 5.11 pants.

It is probably a bad idea to be seen reading a gun magazine in parts of Europe and maybe in an airport even in the U.S. All you need is some mad-dog anti-gun fanatic screaming that you are planning to engage in mass murder. Remember, some of the "gun control" folks once advocated summary executions for anyone even suspected of owning a gun. Those loonie fringe people are still around, looking to make things hard on us evil doers.

Of course, if you get your kicks out of "in your face" confrontations with authority, that is a different matter, but if you just want to get where you want to go with no trouble, leave the gunzines at home.

What parts of europe?

I lived in Beijing and you are far safer with a gun magazine than ANYTHING with "Tibet" written in English. Just about everything is available in China on the black market- most people don't care and the government doesn't either, with white foreigners anyway... They don't want an international incident, just don't make a public a$$ outa yourself and you'll be ok. I feel a far larger police presence here in the states. Have fun!

No kidding. Out come the imagined jackboots and stereotypes. I've walked by street vendors with stalls selling adult toys of all kinds. Try to pull that off in America. For the most part, the government doesn't care if you're selling genuine articles, clones, or knockoffs. If you want to buy a real Rolex, a Rolex-inspired watch, or a Bolex, you can. I've seen 5.11 gear, and even knockoffs like "9.11 Tactical". Despite China being a communist country, the economy at the individual level is very capitalist. People are making incredible fortunes and you can find anything you want.

Thank you folks who have been abroad for the illuminating information about foreign gun literature. Strangely, when it comes to tactical and firearms literature and stuff, even China sounds like a paradise compared to college. It's kind of a funny inverse; there, many common crimes are punished more harshly, such as drugs, but other things, like having gun literature, is not at all uncommon. Here, it's not at all uncommon to get away with drugs, theft, and graffiti, but if you dare have a Jeff Cooper book, then things get serious.
