Reasons he carries a gun, why do you carry?

Ran across this at TTAG today and thought I should pass it along. These are the reasons that this particular fellow, an English teacher, carries a gun every day. I thought it funny to mention he is also a classically trained singer, a first tenor-"yes, the highest male voice". And mentions that he may appear a bit "leftish" at first glance:).

Usually when I get all excited and run to the computer to post a link at THR, I find someone else has already beat me to it. So apologies if that is again the case.

One example, and he lists many good ones, quite eloquently: "From time to time, politicians forget their place. The carrying and use of arms by law abiding citizens helps them, gently, remember."

I am shocked that this fellow, supposedly an English teacher, would write such a disorganized mess. He should have sat down and outlined his arguments first. I gave up trying to read that "wall of text."
 
Yea. I like the last reason too. Cuz i can. We have to stay in the fight though, to be sure we always "can".

What argument really needs to be outlined here? Aint it obvious?

That's my pat response... :rolleyes: .
Really when LE responses are 25 to 45 min you can't expect or plan for a sworn LE officer or even a unarmed $9.00/hr security guard to come flying to your aid.
Having a sidearm or even 2(because two is one & one is none, right. :D ) gives you peace of mind or at least some time-distance to get to safety.
I carry my Glock 21 .45acp often. I plan to get a new M&P Shield "No Thumb Safety" 9x19mm. It will fit in a cargo pocket or in my slacks. I'm not much for ankle holsters. I'd buy a shoulder rig for my Glock or maybe a M&P .40S&W later. I plan to drop a few lbs this fall & winter so shoulder rigs & suit jackets should fit better. I have narrow shoulders but a wide chest so concealment can be a problem.
 
I couldn't follow the article. It was unnecessarily long, so I gave up. I carry when I want to because I can.. And I always feel better if I have a gun or two with me.

Are you serious? Using proper grammar and efficient, clean style when writing a paper has legitimate value outside the classroom or office. Any working professional should understand that, especially a teacher.

Who's going to do a better job getting his point across and winning his audience over?

1) Guns is important cause da guys who started this here country knowed we was gonna need dem to keep our freedoms after a bunch a years.

2) Firearm ownership is important because our founding fathers understood and took measures, primarily in the form of the Second Amendment, to ensure future Americans would have both the means and the fortitude to defend themselves and maintain, for future generations, the freedoms they enjoyed as a result of the sacrifices of the men who built this country.

I guess, since this isn't a term paper, the first one does a better job of highlighting the importance of guns and gun ownership. Derp.

Why do I carry? Because there are people out there who are willing to hurt anyone to get what they want, and I don't want to live to see the day when a member of my family is victimized in my presence, and I can't do anything to stop it.
 
Bobson, I understand the more clearly written, the better read (rhymes with deed) it will be, Im just not seeing the problem with his delivery. Either way, I was tongue-n-cheeking the "term paper" comment. Point being, it was meant to be short bursts of easy to understand bullets, not a dissertation.

I learned English in Pierce County and that has helped me spel gud the rest of my life. :) If only my typing wouldn't let me down. I thought the article was bit long but enjoyed the sentiment and the arguments put forth. I'd rather read the article and use it as a resource than not....
 
That is a fun read!

Why do I carry? Well, here's my non-exclusive list:
  • Because I cannot predict the future.
  • Because I have a wife and daughter whom I love dearly.
  • Because there are bad people in this world.
  • Because I may one day need a gun to stop bad people from doing bad things to me or my family.
  • Because my job includes putting people in jail and suing drug dealers.
  • Because I have the right to do so.
 
"Because I can" is not a reason for carrying a gun. There are literally countless things any of us can do, that we do not (such as cross-dress or break out into song in public every day.)

I carry a gun because I like to have it near, and to be in control of it. True, I certainly don't need one, but if that shoud change, such a change would likely be sudden and desperate in nature.
 
This reads more like a stream of thought (or rant, as some would say) than a premeditated, organized effort. Sadly unbecoming of TTAG.

I read through the comments here before reading the article, and being the son of a writer myself, was prepared to jump to the article's defense, but sheesh... it does ramble.

Oh well, he makes lots of good points.

I subscribe to the "use them or lose them" mentality. It's the only thing that would make me willing to put up with Mass' lengthy and expensive (over $300 now) application process. Some of you might say "why bother, just move" but that's exactly what my elected representatives want. And I don't aim to please them.
 
After carrying handguns for various reasons in widely-varied locations over many years (decades), my reasons for so doing have cooked-down to one simple fact:

THE HIDDEN GUN GIVES ME OPTIONS.

.....options that I would not otherwise have, for situations that are not always predictable.

Simple indeed.
 
I don't really feel the need to carry to make any kind of statement about my rights etc. I carry because the world is full of crazy bastards and the thought of cowering in a corner waiting for my turn to get dead just isn't that appealing.
 
My first CCW Permit is dated 14Apr75 (I still have it).

I started out carrying because of my job (because, at the time, Personal Protection was not an acceptable reason) but for a very long time it has had nothing to do with work.

I was robbed at work late at night once (Winter'75). The aspect of that event that left the biggest impression upon me was my total lack of control in a potentially deadly situation.

Never again.

By carrying a concealed weapon I have a better chance of "having a say" if I ever find myself again thrust into such circumstances.
 
I carry a handgun because NOBODY is responsible for my physical safety, nor is ANYBODY going to protect me but me.

When you rely completely upon others for your physical safety, you're nothing more than their property.
 
Thanks for commenting fellas. Plus one, GBexpat and Schwing, all the crazy bastards are reason enough. Lack of control is a scary deal.
 
Ok, I couldn't load the links at work, and horribly misread the OP.

I thought this was an "English" ( the country ) Teacher, talking about Carrying. I was very, VERY confused.


Wow. Seriously, reread this whole thread with that context. Eye opening :D
