Hey guys, saw the other Arisaka thread and it made me wonder, could you rechamber a Type-99 to use 7.62x54r ammo?

Please-just for clarification, I already have a Mosin, and will probably buy more in the future. However, I really like 7.62x54r and would like to have more types of rifles in it, thats all.

Of course with enough time and money anything is possible. Just be aware of the difficulty of that project. These rifles have been converted top 7.62NATO but I've never heard of a 7.62x54r conversion. If u decide to do it take pictures and keep us in the loop! in the meantime check out Wikipedia for history on your rifle and some helpful, but vague conversion info! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_99_rifle

7.7x58 with a rimless base slightly larger than a .30-06, to take a 7.62x54r with a fat base and an even huger rim?

You'd need to completely redesign the bolt, magazine, chamber, and etc. Not worthwhile.

The idea of rechambering to 762x54r rang a bell with i heard a story from some old vet about the japenese trying to rechamber some captured mosin nagants into 7.7x58 not sure if its true but if it goes one way might go the other

Won't work.

Not only is a 7.7x58 chamber a great deal longer but the type99 also has the feed ramp and breaching cut into the face of the bbl greatly complicating setting back or replacing the original barrel

I completely agree. I am not sure why some are saying that it is not possible. Of course it is possible, but the time and money involved would be extraordinary.

You would probably have better luck trying to convert a 6.5 Jap to the 7.62x54R.

the problem is the bolt face. The rimmed cartridge versus the semi-rimmed catridges will seat differently on the bolt face. Extraction would be an issue.

Honestly though, id you insist on converting a 7.7 Jap, I think 8mm Mauser would be the better way to go, but that would defeat the purpose of sharing ammo with your Mosin.

Also, remember that the cost of having a gunsmith make this conversion, you could probably buy a few more Mosin Nagant rifles, and maybe a spam can of ammo to go with them. All for converting another $150 rifle?

Unless you can do much of the work yourself, the cost of conversion would be quite a bit, and you could buy several Mosins instead. The magazine would prove to be an issue due to the overlap on the rimmed cartridges when stacked. It's just a mismatch of cartridge to rifle design.

Just take the money you would waste with an unsuccessful "conversion" and buy some 7.7 ammo. You can imagine you're invading the phillipines or something while shooting. If the rifle is in good shape just keep it and buy something else, or sell it and use the money, ect. Eating rice and fish first helps with the japanese role-playing; I shoot my type 38 fairly often.
