Howdy again all. I'd like to get some opinions on the costs, +'s and -'s and the like on rebarreling vs rechambering a Ruger M77R (tang safety) long action that I may end up with.
I need to do a chamber cast on it to check the case and caliber sizes as it has been rebarreled in the past and the caliber is not marked anywhere on the weapon, outside or under the stock hidden areas. It like it is somewhere in the 270 to 280 bore dia region. A 270 and '06 case will not slide in the chamber but a 7mm mauser and 257 roberts will. I think it might well be a wildcat of some sort as the barrel is pretty heavy but not quite bull barrel thick. The stock has also been replaced and is a nicly fitted and floated and of walnut and someone added a nice looking inlay to the grip cap. The wood is pretty scratched up but that could be cleaned, sanded and refinished easily. The trigger I believe has been replaced and is nicely adjusted and quite light with no discernable take up. I normally wouldn't bother or consider taking on a rifle like this for a project but it was a Bday gift for a boy from a friend and he wants and needs a car more than a rifle and he shows little intresting the shooting sports even with my active prodding. I may buy it from him to add to his car fund...
Thoughts and ideas would be appreciated fom all. If it is a common caliber, great no work will be needed. But if it is a wildcat I am likely to re-chamber it in a 270, 280 or the like. If I rebarrel it pretty much anything goes so long as it has a '06 sized cartrige head... I have a heard of lever guns upto 45-70 and am selling my Rem M700 BDL/SS in 338 due to not really needing it so I would be looking for a smaller bore if I rebarrel. Perhaps do it as a varmint/target rifle.
