I'm looking for some information about possibly rebarreling a Remington 750 Woodmaster .270 win. About a year ago I acquired a Browning A-Bolt .270 in a raffle from our local fire department, and the Woodmaster has been in the safe ever since.

Lately, I've been playing with the idea of selling it and putting the money towards an AR mainly since I don't own anything smaller than a 7x57, not counting rimfires. I don't see much use in owning different guns (or the same gun) in the same caliber. The only reason I have two 12 ga. is because I didn't want to use my trap gun for hunting.

However, this gun was my present for my 16th birthday. It was an upgrade from the .30-06 742's that had both belonged to my dad and grandpa. Grandpa's jammed horribly, dad's still shoots great.

So basically I'm a bit sentimental. My main question is, could I rebarrel it to something like .260 Remington? I would go with .243, as my uncle has a 742 chambered for that (we like Remington obviously). However, if I went with .243 or .308, I might as well trade it for a new rifle, same with rechambering it for 35 Whelen. I think .260 would work well for coyotes and deer and be a bit overkill for prairie dogs. Also, the .243/.308 mags would work in my old .270 as my uncles .243 mags are the exact same size as my .270 mags. The smaller mags just have a spacer at the rear so everything action wise should be fine. What do you guys think?

I think you could put your money to a better use than a new barrel (unless it just won't shoot). Spend your cash on a really nice scope (that can be removed and mounted on a different rifle if necessary) or put a better trigger in it.

I'm not sure if you can just change to a short action round without getting a new receiver, so I'll leave that question to others.

If you do want to look into rebarreling your Rem 750, this site specializes in accurizing many types of semi-autos including match barrels in various calibers. An email to them might give you an idea if it's practical to consider. I've seen their ads, but never did business with them.
