I'm sure this is posted somewhere on THR, but I can't seem to run across it. I need to put in slightly lighter springs, polish, lube etc. to knock a pound or two off an overly stiff J-frame DA trigger. Is there a good protocol for this posted (or is this strictly something for former auto tinkerers not to try? :uhoh: )

I'd suggest starting by picking up a copy of Kuhnhausen's book, then reading it from cover to cover.

You can do a lot with a J frame; if you don't know what you're doing, however, you can wreck it, too.

As it was explained to me, S&W has a hard 'skin' surface treatment on their steel action components (Rockwell 40) about 20 thousandths thick. If you know what you are doing you can polish that; if you don't you wear thru it to the center which is only Rockwell 20, and the parts will wear and you will have to replace them.

Nothing different between the different frames sized except the coil springs on the J and I wouldn't mess with the springs anyway. Polish up the parts Smith was too cheap to do, lube it and you're golden.

The Kuhnhausen book won't hurt a bit.

Clean the gun up and do a little polishing, that is all good. DON'T change the springs, J-frames don't have much 'extra' spring power at all and reliability can be compromised very easily with spring changes.
