I'm kicking around the notion of buying myself a m1911 just for range fun. But I really don't care for 45acp, I won't go into why so don't bother trying to convince me otherwise.

Here's my requirements

priced under $700

full sized

the flashier the better

I'm really leaning towards one of those nifty Rock Islands with the nickel finish in 38super, but ya'll may convince me there's something I need even more

Rock Island offers a shiny chromed one in 38 Super. If that's too exotic it only requires a gunsmith to fit a new barrel and it's converted to 9x19. Even with the new barrel and cost of fitting you'd be under $700.

RIA 1911 .38 Super 440 shipped from Bellshire Hardware.

Did i mention they are nickel thats bling for me !!!

ahahahaha I only read a little and i barely noticed you are already considering it, well that is what i got i cannot wait to shoot it. So my friend i recommend it to you.

No doubt in my mind at all that you want a bright stainless 38 super. Super 38 was developed in the 20's, and has a LONG history with the 1911. Feeds better than 9mm in the 1911 platform, and is hotter (if you handload).

And there's NOTHING more pimp than a bright stainless Colt Super 38 :D

(not mine, but I want one!)

A used Dan Wesson? They make .40 and 10mm. I'd go for a used RZ-10

For $700, I'd get something besides a 1911...IMHO

I'd take the HK 45s or the Rock Island or the Taurus PT1911. Very nice shooters.

You can get a 9mm or .38 super Colt for that price. I see 9mm Commanders all the time for $650ish. Happy hunting.

I paid $150 for my stainless-steel 9mm.....
It's a hoot at the range, will send anything that I feed it downrange without fail, and also has replacement barrels available in .38 Super & 7.62x25.

Those stainless tok's are neat, But I've already owned a Norinco Tokarev. Part of the reason for my wanting a m1911 is the plentiful aftermarket and the ease of customization.

I went today and put a bunch more rounds through dad's RIA 38super. I believe that's what I'm gonna have to buy. I don't know where all the nickel ones went I may just have to settle for paukerizing.

I even looked into buying a STAR B but again no customizeability

I have a couple of .38 Super Gov't models. Alas, they are not shiny!

One is 2-tone however, matte stainless frame and rust blue slide.

Come to think of it, the other one is also 2-tone, since it too has a rust blue slide, but the frame was still in good shape, and has Colt's shiny hot blue finish.

I need to do some thing about that some day.

WHOA, that stainless Tokarev is cool as hell! Lord knows how much they'd go for nowadays....

There was one on gunbroker last week for something like $350

I found mine for considerably less than that. :D

I've also found quite a bit of info on customizing Tokarevs. Not too hard a thing to do.

.38 Super

On the Rock Island, check to see if the .38 S headspaces on the case mouth instead of the pesky narrow rim. Otherwise you will have severe accuracy problems. For most of its long life, it had a well deserved rep for poor accuracy, which was cured when Sig introduced this caliber over 25 years ago in their P220 series with the case headspacing on the mouth. It took Colt forever to figure this out.

Also, in the 1911 config., hot loads will cause problems because the rear of the case is not well supported. Competition shooters found this out the hard way.

This ammo is costly and hard to find. Some say that published velocities aren't realistic and are hard to duplicate. It goes back to the rear end of case lacking adequate support in 1911's particularly.

Also, .38 S and 9mm extractor, and ejector are different so converting from one to the other can be a big deal.

If you want a tack driver, put a Bar-Sto barrel in one. See their website.

I've had several Supers and loved them. They can be troublesome.
