Yeah, I'm keeping my eye on the CX4 auctions on GB. I'm watching that one and some others.

I'm still torn on the CX4 vs AR though. I've been leaning toward the CX4 and I probably still am. But the $600 AR is making up some ground just for the versatility. I think ammo cost is going to play the biggest role in this. I just need to figure out what the price difference is going to be for say 1000 rounds of 9mm and 1000 rounds of .223. Or even 1000 rounds of .30 carbine ammo. If there's a significant price different, say $75 to $100, then I'll probably go for the CX4.

This is just off the top of my head so I may be a cent or two off, but the lowest price of the cheap rounds (and a few additional ones thrown in for the purpose of comparison) are roughly as follows (best picks are in bold):

.22LR: $0.04/rnd
7.62x25mmTok: $0.10/rnd
5.45x39.5mm: $0.15/rnd
9mmPara: $0.15/rnd
7.62x39mm: $0.18/rnd
.223Rem.: $0.20/rnd (for Barnaul or better, Tula can generally be had for a cent less)
7.62x54R: $0.20/rnd
.17HMR: $0.20/rnd
.30Carbine: $0.30/rnd
.45ACP: $0.35/rnd
.308Win: $0.35/rnd
.30-06Spf.: $0.50/rnd

:)

I don't know where you're finding 9mm for 0.15/round, but I'd like to find out! The cheapest I've seen/bought was $9/box for Brown Bear. That was at a gun show and they didn't charge me tax. So it was $9 OTD and that comes out to $0.18/round.

So going from your figures, it looks like a difference of $50 between 9mm and .223. And for $50 more dollars, you can get 1333 rounds of 9mm for approximately the same price as 1000 rounds of .223. *Wheels are slowly turning...*

I was going off of memory, as I said earlier don't crucify me for being off by a few cents...but here is some 9mm Parabellum for $0.16/rnd...close enough IMO.

:)

I'm not gonna crucify you. I just wanted to know where you finding it at so I could stock up. I'm surprised that Cheaper than Dirt has a decent deal. I've stopped checking out their website lately because their prices have been getting almost ridiculous. Glad to see that they've come back to reality on a few things. That's a good deal on the Brown Bear.

gotta second the camp 9 nomination. the fun factor is off the charts, it's American made, and you can get them for cheap (<$500 for a REALLY nice one, average about 250-300). As pointed out above, ammo is cheap too.

Now get to blasting and have some fun!

I'd suggest a 5.45x39mm AK or an inexpensive AR. CMMG has been running sales recently of S&W AR's near the $600 mark too, and if you can find one of those under $700 it would be both fun and practical. As far as AK's, I like my 7.62x39mm AK, but 5.45x39 is lighter, more accurate, and recoils less. Either one is a lot of fun to shoot, though.
YES. YES. YES!

Dont overlook the AK74 for cheap centerfire plinking.

I believe thats 13 cents a round.

600 bucks could get you the rifle and 1k rounds easy.
YES. YES. YES!

Buy something in 5.45x39. Dirt cheap shooting. Cheap rifles. Semiauto love. Ammo can be had for 11-12 cents a shot depending on quantity bought. Not much gets cheaper than that, especially out of a semiauto AK pattern rifle. It would be my choice. Others mentioned here are pretty good alternatives, but when it comes to bottle neck rifle cartridges in a semiauto there isn't much cheaper and as fun as the 5.45x39.

That's a good deal on the Brown Bear.
Yep, and BB, and most other Barnaul, is generally pretty good stuff (at least their rifle fodder is), though I would try a box before ordering a case.
