"Fun Gun" Recommendations

If that were the case, then everyone would only own one single caliber.

A lot of us more seasoned shooters have reduced calibers down dramatically for ease of logistics.

Once you have that realization you tend to only buy guns radically different from ones you already own but in common calibers if possible. I've been where you are. You will quickly become bored with a "fun gun" only slightly different than the ones you're already bored with.

Live a little, buy something REALLY different.

Straight pull K31. Accurate, powerful, smooth action, excellent trigger, and I always get asked "what the heck is that?" when they see how fast the bolt is cycled. :D

Or a Mini 14. Not accurate, not powerful, mediocre trigger, but still fun to blast away with.

Or a Marlin 336. Racking that lever like you're in an old cowboy shootout is entertaining.

You make an excellent point there, and I've experienced the same thing, buying similar guns in the same caliber only to be quickly bored with them.

At the risk of being crucified, I didn't like the M1Carb I had for a short time in my possession.

I've always wanted a 9mm carbine of just about any configuration.
A Win 94-22 is also very high on my list...useful for rodents with the .22Short.
I'd really like a CZ 550 in .375 H&H. It wouldn't be 'useful' but just because...

Sorry: wrote before I read...recoil sensitive the CZ is not. OTOH my .45-70 1895 does not push at all when loaded with gov ammo...seriously!!!

My 1894 in .44Rem Mag doesn't push much either, not any more than a 7.62x39...

I'm not looking to buy anything in a similar caliber, though.

I would highly recommend the m1 carbine as a fun gun. Just the military history of it adds to the shooting experience a little but it is such a nice light rifle that points and balances great. The .30 carbine round is awesome too with enough recoil to add shooting fun but not too much to distract you from shooting. If you don't get this then I would also say like others an m1 garand would be my next choice.

If you don't already roll your own, as it were, "hand loading," maybe start that? It is a very rewarding aspect of our hobby. A nice single shot rifle is a great fun gun, and typically, one that doesn't break the bank to shoot. Can have a full day of great fun shooting with less than 50 rounds.

Been reloading for probably 10 years now.

Great point. I had no idea how fun handloading/range testing would be, for me at least. I'm not that much of a "blaster" but do look forward to a few hours of loading something new, followed by an afternoon of testing it at the range.

Guess my blasting years are mostly behind me, esp. with the 10's of thousands of rounds I shot in training.

I would pass on the Century C308. It's gotten some negative press, and is not as well put together as a proper PTR.

If you want to get into thw platform, and you should (extremely fun rifle to shoot), check around for a sale on the PTR GI model. I know Atlantic Firearms has a new GI with factory paddle mag for about $800. If you can afford a C308, you can afford a PTR-91 GI with just a bit more saving, and will have a better, proven representation of the platform.

But it's your money, not mine. Do whatever you want.

My $.02

Most any PCC is a hoot to shoot. Even my .40SW 4095, or my 9mm and 45ACP Camp Carbines or my 357 and 44 magnum lever guns.....let alone my 10mm AR. All accurate (well except my Marlin with lead 44 Special ), all interesting.

YMMV, but my fun gun is a suppressed 9mm AR SBR with an Aimpoint. REALLY a blast to shoot, cheaper ammo than 233/556, and I can take it to an indoor range.

The combo of SBR and supressed is really fun.....I grin the entire time I'm at the range.

If not an AR platform, perhaps a 9mm carbine.

No interest in your possible selections. Fun Gun? Never get tired of plinking with a 22 cal. Never.

Plus, you won`t break the bank on ammo costs.

Plus, it keeps me technically sound for the bigger rounds.

Best of both worlds.

If you can find one, a vz.58 (or VZ2008) is a dang fun rifle (about the size/weight of an M1 carbine) that shoots an inexpensive round.
