Recommend a Fun Gun!

Okay, first off thanks for the great replies! I will try to provide some more criteria to consider.

I do not own a centerfire automatic rifle, so that's why I'm leaning that route. Someone talked about paper punching in a slower gear. I've been doing that for the last, I don't know, 10 years at least! It's time to step it up a little I think.

Would LOVE to get a CX4 in 9mm. I almost bought one when they first came out and they were only about $600. But it seems like they're all around the $800 to $900 mark now.

What about the C93 Sporter? It intrigues me but the Century part makes me question it's reliability.

You can pick up a SIG 552 for under $600 if you look.

Do you mean the 522? If so, I'm looking for something with a little more "umph" than a 22LR.

M1 Carbine

Thought about that too, but I don't know that ammo is a cheap as some other options.

$600 is going to be my top end. Pretty soon 6 will turn into 7 and then 7 will turn into 8.

The mycarbine.com looked a little hoaky in my opinion. I'd rather get a real AR and convert it to 9mm. But it's out of my price range anyway. I still really don't know to pick....:what:

I want to second (or third, or fourth, who knows) the mini14. great fun guns. they are divas when it comes to the mags you cram in them but they are insanely fun. I got mine used for around 400, did some modifications, and love it.
speaking of modifications, that's an advantage to the mini... there's all sorts of stuff you can do to it that makes for endless potential (other than precision shooting, but you said minute of body). I love them. You might also. Look in pawn shops.

The comm-bloc stuff make great fun guns due to their ruggedness and cheap ammo.

AK - grab yourself a WASR from JG\AIM\ClassicArms...$400ish leaves you extra for ammo
Mosin - $100 plus all the ammo you want...and turns a lot of heads at the range
SKS - I've got a Yugo still in the cosmo ;)

I've had a Mosin before. The carbine version without the bayo, the M38 maybe? While it was a fun gun to have and not worry about, it was a killer on the shoulder. And I'm really preferring a semi-auto at this point.

Right now, there's been a lot of recs for the mini-14 so I'll keep that in the running because of all the positive things people are saying. But I'm also going to keep the WASR in the mix to. I like the rugged, reliable, and "boogeyman" rep that they have.

I saw a segment on Guns and Ammo TV or one of those shows abou the Galil or Golani. It looked like a pretty cool range toy. Anyone have experience with them? Searching on here, they get mixed reviews. But G&A TV said they were good fun guns.

And I've always really liked the Yugo SKS rifles. They're just a little heavy. Especially considered I'm looking for more of an offhand gun, not something to shoot from bags or anything.

An M1 Garand? That definitely has the fun factor. You can get a rack-grade one from the CMP for $500.

I'd like to have a Garand too, but with the price of the -06 ammo, I couldn't afford to shoot it much. If I ever get to buy a Garand, I want to buy one that's in good condition and something that doesn't get shot much.

I recently bought a S&W M&P 15-22. At under $450 it was a good deal and came with 2 - 25 round clips. I purchased another 3 clips for $60, a cheap WallyWorld Red/Green dot sight for $40 and an under the barrel laser for $30. The 22 LR ammo is cheap (you do have to be somewhat picky on the brands that will feed correctly) and my family has had nothing but fun shooting it. While I have read about malfunctions, I shot close to 500 rounds through it on my first outing (after a light cleaning/oiling) with no problems.
Got to agree with this. The M&P 15/22 is a hoot.

Well, if the .30-06 of a Garand is too expensive per shot, how about something like an AK-74 or the Saiga knock-off of it? That has super cheap ammo, but it's still center-fire and has good knock-down power.

AK variants are in the running.

Not looking for another 22LR though.

And you know, those CX4s must be pretty good little guns because I don't see many used ones on the market in my area. Matter of fact, I can't think of a single time I've seen a used one at a gun show. People must want to hang onto them for some reason.

Since we're talking centerfire now, I've gotta say that my all time most fun gun in the centerfire variety is the AR15. If you're interested, check out the "bargain bin" rifles at CMMG. They are in your price range. I've read lots of good reports from those that bought them. I've also read that although they come without a warranty, CMMG won't leave you hanging with a rifle that doesn't work.

Shooting it isn't too expensive. Any AR that's running right should shoot steel cases ammo and that can be had for around $4 a box.

CMMG Bargain bin AR s have a very good reputation on the numerous AR sites.

You get ANY AR and down the road you add a .22LR conversion kit for under $200. Switch back and forth as need / desire between .223 and cheap .22LR!

Would LOVE to get a CX4 in 9mm. I almost bought one when they first came out and they were only about $600. But it seems like they're all around the $800 to $900 mark now.
If that's something you like you could always get a hi-point 995 (9mm carbine) and slap it into an ATI stock for a CX4 clone that costs less than half what a beretta runs (you can be into it less than $300 including that stock) and have plenty of $$ left for ammo. See the 3rd pic down on Max's site for what they look like. I'm considering one myself.

I've looked at the HP in the ATI stock. I don't know. I'm afraid that with as much as I've always wanted the Beretta, I'd get the HP and wished I had saved for the Beretta.

I'm really torn now, probably more than I was in the beginning.

Do I:

a) Go for the Wasr-10 and buy $200 worth of ammo totally $600

b) Go for the bargain bin CMMG for $600 and have to wait little longer for the extra do-dads and ammo

c) Keep saving and eventually get the CX4, which I know I'll be happy with but tough it out in the short term while I really want another new gun.

The mini-14 is a good recommendation, but it's a little on the "safe" side. It looks too much like a regular sporting rifle and I just don't think that's what I want to go for on this purchase. I've got too many other sporting rifles in my safe.

Any thoughts?

If the CX is what you want, then you should get it. Look at gunbroker.com You can make a pretty good deal on a CX. Just make sure to get the right version. 92 mags vs. PX mags.

My most fun rifles are the M17S, the M1 Carbine, and the VZ.58. While they are pretty different in many ways, all are semi-automatic carbines that fire an intermediate cartridge. I don't currently own a pistol caliber carbine, but I plan to buy one of the new MSAR MCS when they come out this winter (though I am sure it will be spring or later before they are actually available)...FWIW the MSRP is set at $850.00USD.

:)

Pump shotgun + 100 round walmart bulk ammo + a buncha soft targets =

Already got a pump and an automatic shotgun. Not what I'm looking for.

I'm going to be checking Gunbroker for the CX4. Maybe I can find a deal.

BTW, the MSAR MCS looks badass. And 10mm! That's not really practical for fun shooting and spraying lead, but it would be a nice hog gun!
