Im looking to buy me another 22. For some reason I keep thinking I want a bolt action. And i dont really like all these new plastic guns. guess im kind of old school. Anyway i need a 22 bolt action that is accurate, and can take a beating. Something thats gonna go bang everytime. Cause its not gonna be a show piece. I need a workhorse i guess.:D What do you recommend?

CZ 513 basic, Marlin, Savage

if you expect to bang it around, I am not sure I would get the more expensive stuff

I got a savage Mark II at Dicks for $240 w/o thinking too much of it jut for fun. I shot .308 and other magnum calibers all my life and let me tell you that the little Savage is a joy. It came with accutrigger, flutted bull barrel and an unexpensive yet effective stock and scope(included) and prints below MOA consistently at 100 yards.
Don't beat yourself up. The key ingredient is that in 22LR you need a bull barrel and stay away from the cheapest Remington/similar value packs to get some consistency from the loads.

Price range? I'd start there and see what is available. Lots of older rifles are built very well and sell cheap. Most of today's stuff is built a bit cheaper, but seems to shoot with or better than the old stuff and is still durable enough to last longer than most shooters plan to shoot.

Really, go to a good store, hold a bunch. Shoulder a bunch. See which one calls to you and get it. Any of them will have their supporters and their detractors. I would define a price range and see what you can find that fits that range. A good store should allow you to feel a few models from most of the bigger brands today as well as some older rifles. I really like Cabela's to handle firearms. I may not buy any of them from there, but they tend to have most brands in stock to handle as well as a few of the older rifles to feel. You can find what you like there and then search for a better price afterwards.

I had a Ruger 77/22 for a while. Not bad, but I really like the CZ-452 American I bought a few years ago.

My favorite bolt action .22lr is a Anschutz sporter built on the M54 action. It is a little spendy, but I know several folks who use their entry level sporter, built on the M164 action, for serious small game hunting. It you'd like a bit of bling, the M164 action can be had in the current Weatherby Mark XXII..

In the more reasonable $300 range, I think you'd have to go a long way to beat a CZ 452 (I think the current is a 455). My favorites are the FS and the American

I'd say just about any
a TOZ is the same as the Winchester Wildcat cause the Winchester are relabeled and cost hundreds LESS. They have a rep for accuracy, but then just about any $99 pawn shop special will put lead down range. Some of those will be in Winchester Model 52 class, most won't.

Shadow - I want to see a $99 pawn shop stick with a fully accurized win 52. It's not that I don't believe you.. wait.. Yeah I don't see it happening. There could be a freak of accuracy out there. My grandpa's win 52 would keep up with his anschutz, and that annie won a gold medal (though not with my grandpa behind it)

If you want a rifle that will take a beating, you probably do not want to spend $2,000 on it. This would be my advice:

Open sights - CZ 452 Trainer, Lux.
Scope- Sako Quad, CZ 452/453 American (or synthetic model) or Anschutz 64action.
Money no object- Anschutz 54 action, Cooper 57M
Money main concern- Savage.

As most posts are, the list of rifles are only my opinions/recommendations. Not saying which one is more accurate than the other.

There is a great article in the "Gun Tests" magazine July edition that compares the CZ 452 Silhoutte, the Anschutz 64 MP R and the Browning T-Bolt Target Varmit. Anyone into rimfire should read it. Just my 2 cents, but I'm not sure why the authors choose this comparison as the Anschutz weighs 8.6 lbs and is more or less designed to shoot from a bench, and the CZ weighs 5.6 lbs and is made more or less for offhand shooting. In any event, the results were surprising with all rifles basically turning in sub-moa accuarcy with every ammo tested under every scenario.

I have two CZ 452’s (22lr and 17hmr) and highly recommend them.

The current model is the 455 and it can interchange barrels to shoot different rim-fire calibers. I believe they have a package right now that comes with both a 22lr and a 17hmr barrel for in the neighborhood of $450. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.

22 bolt action

I use a Mossberg 44US and can't beat the accuracy on this old workhorse from the 1940's. The 44US has a nice bull barrel and can be had for $250-$350 depending on condition, you just have to look around.

Another vote for Savage, they're great guns and the prices are very good on them.

O.K...you need a ".22 Workhorse"...for what? Are you target shooting? Shooting Game....and what type? Are you plinking?

Please...give us a clue!

My Ruger 77-22 shoots 1/2-5/8 inch groups at 50 yards with a 5 power scope. To get better than that, you would have to spend a lot more money. You can get better, but it will cost.A friend has a CZ that shoots about as good, and would be worth a look. Lightman
