Your Sporter will have rifle length buffer tube if it is original so you will have to change the buffer tube, spring and buffer to carbine length specs. You may run into cycling issues, you may not. I would think you would want an H1 or H2 buffer as you're dealing with a rifle length gas system. Someone hopefully will chime in with what you will need in regards to buffer weight to get it to cycle well.
Personally, I wouldn't sell any of the original parts as I think those old sporters are perfect the way they are and are going to be harder and harder to come by, that way you can always go back to original. And with how cheap it is to assemble AR15's I would keep it the way it is and start piecing together a rifle how you want it. But that wasn't your original question so I'll leave my recommendations at that.
