Hi Everyone,

In past years, I've had gun insurance for theft with the NRA Lockton program. I found that they never emailed me to keep my informed of my insurance renewals and it was too easy for my policy to lapse. I just got off the phone with a Lockton representative and asked if the policy auto-renewed. He said "yes, it auto-renews, but you have to go online each year and make your premium payment". I pointed out to him that meant it didn't auto-renew.

Anywho, I'm looking for a reputable insurance company to insure my guns. Do you all use a dedicated gun insurer, or do you pay for an addendum to your homeowner's policy? I did do a search here in the forum and didn't find anything, so I'm hoping some of you can help me. Thanks.

I just have a rider on my State Farm policy

I have a specific provision in my Valuable personal Property Insurance, which in turn is rolled into my renters insurance, through USAA. Each firearm is insured at the value I declared.

I have an independent policy from the Historic Firearms program at Eastern Insurance; I think it's $150/yr for $50k.

I found that my homeowner's policy was far too expensive for very little coverage in excess of $3k.

As always, I really want to hear from someone who's cashed a check from an insurance company, instead of just writing them.

Does the insurance cover ammo and firearms? I have more invested in ammo then firearms.

Nope, its like $5k including theft and fire. Most home policies can be written to include whatever personal property however.

Talk to an insurance agent. This is getting into lawyer territory as far as internet opinion vs your investment. My experience is that most people have no clue what their insurance policy entails.

Be sure to discuss this with your insurance agent. Your insurance company probably has specific requirements for stuff like appraisals, photos, proper storage, etc, etc. If you don't meet their requirements then you'll discover you're not insured even if you bought and paid for a rider.

I have Nationwide Private Client that I got through a broker with no firearm limit and I increased my personal property limit to cover my guns, knives, reloading equipment and supplies, and ammunition. It is not cheap, but it is much cheaper than a separate firearms rider. Only requires a SN on individual guns over $25K and I think they require storage in a safe.

Regards,

Kris

I also have Nationwide Private Client and I do not have individual insurance on guns but riders on watches and jewelry cost me an additional $600/yr and they do not cover that much value. If I add just a handful of run of the mill firearms it would easily be another $300/yr.

I have Eastern now. I had Collectables for a few years before, but switched because the premiums are significantly lower. I’m fortunate to have never needed to file a claim so I have no idea if they actually pay off or make you sue them in order to collect. I hope to never find out. Our homeowner’s policy is with State Farm and they have a $2500 firearm limit. I never asked what it would cost to add coverage with them.
