I am just starting to look at buying a red dot optic. I currently do not have a handgun that is milled or that I care to mill for a red dot. I do have a Glock 17 gen 3 that I am looking to buy a rear sight dovetail mount to try. I am sure that is not the best way to mount a red dot, but before I buy a new gun, I would like to try a red dot first. Does anyone have any experience with a rear sight dovetail mount?

If you currently own a pistol with a 1913 rail you could purchase something like a Vortex Venom with Picatinny mount to try out. If you’d prefer to use your current G17 you might consider buying an aftermarket slide from Voodoo with the milling already done. Adaptor plates are a few bucks and allow you to use the optic of your choice. If it’s no bueno, sell off the slide and optic and swap your old slide back on.

My trial set-up was a U-22 Neos (railed) and a a $35 Tru-Glo reflex. I disliked everything about that cheap sight and gave it to a friend’s kid but I did like the possibility I saw. I now have an RDS on the Beretta and a Venom on my BuckMark with plans to grab another Venom soon.
