I have some hornady critical defense rounds which are from the factory and contain a red insert in the hollow point. I recently bought some xtp bullets to reload and they do not have the red insert. What is the purpose of this? Why is it not in the bullets I bought from my reloading store?

The XTP bullet is a hollow point. The bullet you get in critical defense rounds are FTX.
The theory with the insert is that it physically forces the bullet to expand on impact, and cannot be clogged by heavy clothing.

The insert prevents clogging of the the expansion cavity as it passes through your soft tissue target thus giving a larger more even wound track.
I used the Zombi-max (another version with the polymer tip) round in my .45 Springfield XD to take a deer last season. The round performed much better then the normal hollow point its based from.

If you're using a pistol for game, make sure you pick the right bullet. Some HP bullets are liable to give very limited penetration.
The pistol was not my Primary, I carry a Ruger 77/44 .44 rifle and my Springfield XD .45. By the time I had a clear shot he was to close for the rifle so the Springfield took it at 15 yards. The Zombie round defiantly does the job, entered right side just behind shoulder took out lung and exited the brest bone (he was angled away slightly) he ran 20 yards and dropped. I would likely not take a shot any longer then 15-20 yards with the .45 as proper penetration would start to be a concern.
