Anyone use this type of balance beam scale? I am thinking of getting one because my electronic scales keep going bad. I have a cheap Lyman balance beam but it is only a back up and realy not up to the task for everyday use.

I have used the Redding and found it very stable. When I'd come back after an absence the 'zero' did not wander. I especially appreciated the heavier base and large adjusting screw. What I did not like was the flat rest for the powder pan. Now, mine was older and maybe this has been corrected on newer models. But once or twice the pan skittered off the flat surface and dumped the powder. Not a big deal, but an annoyance to be sure. I also did not like the small increments going up by 5gr. This forced you to remember if the large weight was on 0gr or 5gr so you could determine if your result was 2gr or 7 gr. It also forced you to make 2 adjustments if you were chasing a measurement in the 4.9 to 5.2gr range.

I now use a new Dillon Eliminator (list price $54) made by Ohaus. It has all the good features and none of the annoying ones. This is an exact copy of the RCBS 5-0-5, also made by Ohaus. In fact, I'm convinced that Ohaus makes the beam for Redding.

(Since most good used scales on Ebay go for $40 + elevated shipping, buying used was not always a great deal either.)

Best peace of mind ever spent , good scales & check weights !!!!

I have a set of the Lymans , & while there good scales I wish they were heavier (in actual weight)

When ya do get ya scales keep em covered to prevent dust gettin into the agate bearings .

While it would take a bit of time to wear the bearings ,many have been damaged by "cleaning" em

I use the Redding scale, very reliable. I throw most of my charges with a measure and check them with the scale periodically.
I don't really trust electronic scales much.

I have the same scale as RF and the predecessor. I don't plan to replace either. The older version is hydraulic dampened. Some think that is more accurate than magnetic dampening.

I've got a RCBS 5-10 beam scale that has served me well for over 25 years. A bud has the RCBS electronic and he has has some issues with it. I prefer to stay with the tried and true.

I had a RCBS 505 scale for years, and it worked great, but some klutz :)o) knocked it off the table and broke it. Thought I would try something different.
