I tried the search function, but the only thing I got back for looking up reduced recoil were threads about Knoxx Stocks and HD guns.

I'm looking for anyone with experience shooting 12 gauge reduced recoil loads. My brother and I are taking his kids to the range, and while I've got my .22 lever to keep them entertained, I know they're going to want to try out shooting some clays. One of the shotguns I have is a Maverick 88 with a Hogue 12" LOP stock, and they can shoulder it alright. The kids are both 10 going on 11, and are of average build for that age, and the ammo in question is the Winlite low noise/low recoil. Any help would be great!

My trap load is Remington Shells with 16.3 gr of Red Dot with a CB 1100-12 wad and 1oz of #8 shot. Very little recoil and it breaks birds consistently even all the way out to 29 yrds.

Wish I remembered how much powder, but I have tried 12 Gauge 7/8 oz. loads at just under 1100 fps. Works great, and has minimal recoil in an average-weight 12 Gauge.

Winchester has some 2.75" 2 1/2 Dram 7/8 oz. shot target loads sold under the AA Brand.

I have found these recoil very little and cost very much though, to the tune of 1/2 the recoil and twice the price of regular target loads. I shot a box of them and like them enough I asked someone to do a case worth (250) of reloads for me to the specs on the shells.

Also, International Trap (aka Olympic Trap), and International Skeet are shot with 24 gram 12 Gauge rounds. That's 5/6 oz. These are available commercially, though also only in top-shelf rounds like AA.

I load a 7/8 oz. load over a light charge of Red Dot or 700X for 1100 fps. It's pleasant to shoot and splatters clay birds from my Model 97. I found the load in the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Manual.

Hope this helps.

Fred

BTW those 7/8 oz. loads at 1100 are essentially indistinguishable from standard loads, if you shoot Trap at 16, or if you shoot clays from a spring thrower. They just don't recoil much.

The Winlites are very good, I've shot some and now load a 7/8 oz, 1200 FPS creampuff equivalent.

Fiocchi and Remington also have good lighter loads.

The International loads run a little hotter, thus more kick.

Even better would be a 3/4oz load, but I know of no commercial offerings.

HTH....
