Refinished pietta grips tru oil project

May refinish this one next. I have built this one to be a shooter its a 2023 Uberti 1860 army. Started out its life as a color case hardened uberti and when it came to me uberti forgot to stake in the anchoring pin for the Arbor so I built it how it should have been built to begin with a correct Arbor.
Gave it my custom "French antique" finish
Fit a fluted cylinder
Installed colt frontier mainspring
I chamfered mouths of the chambers
Cut 11° forcing cone in barrel

I know it can be shortened to that length, how usable is debatable. I ran across a different method of loading with a short lever. This fellow used a short piece of 2x4 on his shooting table, he would get the ball started then grip the gun like he was gonna shoot, point the gun barrel down with the lever on this 2x4 and push down. Worked well for him. You can also make a cheater bar to slip over the lever as well.

You could likely get satisfactory results with a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe slipped over the lever. Certainly not as elegant as the Slixprings offering, but a WHOLE lot less expen$ive.
OK, OK. I'm thrifty cheap! :D
Great idea brother!
ive been supporting slixsprings for years. if I take down this barrel I'll probably grab a slix springs leverage hand.

Smartest thing in my mind a person can do when getting a cap n ball revolver is to buy a set of slix shot nipples, then jump on eBay and buy a HEAVY COLT was mainspring.....

You'll see alot of guys want weak main springs and I can see why if I was a older gentlemen but the originals had HEAVY mainsprings for a reason.

Cap jams will be eliminated

Thanks for the kudos my friend but in all honesty, I doubt the idea is original with me. I most likely read about it somewhere back up the road in years gone by. Thought it was too good not share with others.

Never had the opportunity to try Slix Shot nipples, having had (and still have) excellent service with Treso nipples. With the limited amount of shooting I do now, the dang things just don't wear out!

Thanks for the tip re the heavy Colt mainspring. Am I correct in presuming it would be one that fits the Model P SAA?

Wishing you the best in your endeavors with you "new toy". 👍

Not so sure as to why a HEAVY spring is needed, I like them set at around 4 to 5 lbs pull weight to get it moving off the frame. If everything is setup properly there's no real need for a real heavy spring. Applies to coil spring setups as well as leaf springs.

I like the heavy spring. I know it will set off the cap and keep it against the nipple until I pull the hammer back again.
