I was in a LGS yesterday and seen that they have R-7 in 5 lbs. for a reasonable price. I have only used R-7 in 300 BO sub loads with cast bullets, with a degree of success. In 8x57, I have used IMR-4198 with gas-checked cast. Plus I have been giving some thought on getting a single shot rifle in 45-70, which also would be with cast. Also I may start casting for 223, though I have much jacketed bullets on hand.

I'm be curious to hear of anyone else's experience using R-7 with cast. Good or bad. :)

I should mention that I plan on eventually get into using Hi-Tek powdered coating. But for now I'm just using Alox.

I call it Reloader Black Powder 7.

No matter how hard I drive it, it leaves my 45-70 cases filthy. Other than that, it's very accurate in 45-70.

I tried it in 223 for AR's but it wouldn't cycle the actions.

Tried it one time in 45 Colt "ruger only" loads trying to take advantage of an 1894 Marlin with 20" barrel but never could get decent accuracy.

I haven't noticed any dirtier cases than normal with 300 BO. But I'm probably using less than a 1/4 of it than what you used.
If I were to use it in 8x57, max load would be about 30 gr.

My 350 grain Hornady Interlock loads for 45-70 are a bit dirty but the 405 grain Woodleigh are a lot cleaner.

I also use RL-7 for 7.62x39 out of an AR I built. Barrel seems to like that powder with 123 gr SP bullets.

I have had great luck with Reloder 7 in .223, to be honest, but not with cast, jacketed bullets only. The data I could find was really for lighter bullets up to about 53 graisn, but with the Hornaday 55gr FMJ/BT and SP it seems to work quite well.
