Been out of the presicion game for some time, been doing a bunch carbine stuff. Stumbled on a lightly used Remington VSSF .308, late 90's with the HS Precision stock, stainless/flutted. I picked up for a song so I decided to give it a go. Topped it with a Leupold 4-12x40 Mark AR mil-dot I had unemployed, sitting in standard Leupold two-piece bases/rings with 1/4 inch clearance, Harris bi-pod. Weather is bitterly cold right now go I sucked it up and payed to shoot at our local 100yd indoor range to zero things in. Visually bore-sighted it at 100, took me 6 rounds to zero, so far so good. I had some ammo to try in my stash. Groups are 5 rounds, with a cool down and bore snake cleaning in between. Shooting position is prone, bi-pod with a rear bag. I have not shot a bolt gun in two years thanks to having my shooting shoulder worked on so I know much more range time is needed.

My spotter/coach moved to friggin Tennessee so I did this solo. I see much of my stringing is horizontal which should mean I am pushing and pulling the trigger, some verticle so breathing might come into play.

Secondly, I am an Army trained armorer, so weapon insides don't scare me. I have done plenty of Savage tirggers, AR's and such. While crisp, I feel it could use some lightening. Seems I need to "force" the shot. I read on the net that the Walker trigger is adjustable. Anyone have luck with this?

It got cut off the picture, but the bottom right is USGI M80 ball. I have piles of this stuff so I to trial it. Obviously it shoots like machinegun ammo should. LOL

So, besides load work, much more trigger time, getting it on the 500yd line (longest at the gun club), what do the internet coaches have to offer?

Yes, older Remington triggers (pre-X Mark) are adjustable, and there are good instructions on the interwebs on how to do it. I find I prefer the older triggers to the X-Mark or X-Mark Pro. I have tuned several down to 3# with no creep and a clean break. Do it with care, and be sure to go through the following safety test routine:
1. with rifle unloaded, close the bolt
2. engage the safety
3. pull the trigger ... trigger should not release
4. disengage the safety ... trigger should STILL NOT RELEASE!! A poorly adjusted trigger MAY release when the safety is disengaged, so BE CAREFUL here.

This has been the complaint about Remington triggers--they "go off" when the safety is disengaged. In my experience, this hasn't happened even with a poorly adjusted trigger unless one tries to pull the trigger with the safety on; then when the safety is released, the trigger fires.

Enjoy the VSSF. I had an original in .308 that I regret letting go.

Ive got my xmarks set at 3lbs. I also rather like them.
The design forces the lever under the sear which helps prevent unintentional discharges when the safety is dropped. It can still be miss adjusted tho.

The xmark pros actually have two trigger return screws/springs. Neither has enough travel nor do i consider the trigger mech itself precisely made enough to go under 2lbs (they usually fail the drop test at that weight).
But 3lbs is very doable, one of my xmarks is set somewhere around 2.75(my trigger pull scale, isnt a trigger pull scale) break is crisp and clean.
