I recently received a Remington 1187 20 gauge that was once my fathers. He had sold it to a family friend some years ago and after my father passed the friend asked if i wanted the gun back. I was more than happy to get anything my father once owned back.
When i got it back though i was told that the friend was having trouble with 3” shells jamming. He had taken it to a gunsmith and it was supposedly fixed. When i got it the first thing i did was cleaned it real good and did a thorough inspection. Afterwards during testing i found it was still jamming with not only 3” shells but 2-3/4 as well. When i fire the gun, it will cycle, eject spent shell, and load a new shell but the unfired shells case head will want to come out the action and stop the bolt from going into battery.
I’ve tried cleaning and reassembling numerous times, 4-5 different brand shells, and removing the gas seal activator with no change. I’ve also installed a new oring but haven’t had a chance to try it out. The old one did not look bad and the gun cycles and ejects the spent shells 8’-10’ so i do not believe the oring is the culprit. The only thing that does not look perfect inside the gun is the notch on the carrier dog that grabs the bolt appears to be chipped but the bolt holds open perfect after the last shot so doubtful is the problem either.
I’m at a lost. Any help would greatly appreciated. It’s fully camouflage and my father had bought it for a Turkey gun. It would be cool to get it going again so i could hunt with it this spring.
Thanks!
