I noticed this topic over on Savage Shooters where Northlander is starting to offer sumpin to rem 700 owners us Savage guys have been enjoying for years. Namely the ability to swap barrels with fully cut chambers and adjust headspace via a BBL locking nut.

If I understand this correct you would get a Barrel long threaded for a Rem700 with no shoulder at the end of the threaded shank and the barrel jammed in place with a locking nut just like a Savage, Marlin or Mossberg.

I have no idea how difficult it would be to remove a OE rem barrel without vises and action wrenches but it's at least a step in the right direction for you rem guys;).......I wonder if these will fit Howa's?

buy on action wrench and either barrel vise or savage nut wrench (or both) and it is probably less than what the gunsmith + shipping is going to be. AFter that, you're home free. Better, borrow some stuff or go in together at a club.

Its been around for a bit, isolated 'smiths doing this type thing here and there.

I think it's an excellent idea, especially with today's Remingtons...

For the life of me, I don't know why you wouldn't just by a Savage and capitalize on all the assets it has to offer... on the other hand, if you already own a Remington and would like to rebarrel, this is the thing to do.

Working hard to put we smithies on the porch. lol

I use Northlanders parts, and will say his parts are of excellent quality.

Interesting, thanks for posting it.

I've long considered asking a smith that removes weight from Rem actions if he could do the same to my Savage since they are very similar in dimensions. A used 700 ti with a floating bolt head and a couple of Northlanders barrels could be another approach.

I don't understand why I would ever take the barrel off of my M700.

For the cost and effort that it would take to re-barrel it, I could buy another rifle.

If you pay a gunsmith to do the work than YES but you still have an OEM bbl

If you do the work yourself you can have a quality aftermarket hand lapped bbl that'll shoot circles around a factory tube for under $400 if you play your cards right. In my opinion a quality barrel is the single biggest accuracy upgrade you can do to a rifle. Ive seen McGowan barrels shoot 5 shot groups in the 0.2"s from round ONE through a brand new barrel, they make an EXCELLENT barrel
