Remington 700P in .300 or 700 LTR in .308?

Ok so I'm looking for a new rifle and I'm leaning towards a Remington 700 Police in .300 Win Mag for sale at a local shop here for about $650 in like new condition.

Any thoughts on this for a new range gun? I have a really nice scope already I just need a nice rifle to go with it. I was offered $300 in trade in value for a pretty well used Sig 2340 so I'm thinking hmmm.....should I grab this gun while I have the chance? Or is not as great a deal as I'm thinking?

go down a few posts I just added a new question about the 700 LTR......

You won't be sorry....

You should get the rifle. I have the .300 Win Mag in a Sendero. I love it!!! Its really fun to shoot the 500 yard steel plate. Accurate!!!
Just look at what those rifles are selling for now. I couldn't find one under $700.00 on Gunbroker.
If you look at the new ones by Remington they start over $800.00.
$650.00, I would get it...

Just my .02

I had a Remington Sendero in 300 win mag. The scope was a Leupold 4.5-14. I bought it from an active duty USMC sniper. These rifles will shoot. No the 300 will not last as long as a .308 due to throat errosion.

Maybe the 700 LTR instead?

Just out of curiosity they also have a Remington 700 Police LTR .308 for $899, its a bit more than I want to spend but its brand new and at least the ammo is cheaper. Would that be a better choice? I'm thinking down the line it might be better to go with a .308, plus its the same caliber as my M1A so I wouldn't have to be different ammo when I go to the range. I don't wan to buy the worng thing just because its a good deal, I've made that mistake several times already:banghead:

What does "in like new condidtion" mean?

I've found that this rating has wildly different meanings depending on the gunshop.

Around where I live, "in like new" condition can mean thousands of rounds through it.

I got sick of it and stared to learn what makes for red-flags or what are the real signs of wear or indicators of round count.

Then I realized that it is futile as gunshop markup on used firearms is an insult to ones integrity and intelligence. I just buy new.

If the different between it and a new one is $150, just get a new one.

nwilliams,

I'm thinking you answered your own question.

Price sounds good on the rifle, but don't ever trade a gun in at a gunshop. You are lucky to get 60% of the value. Sell it on the forums.

If you reload, 300 Win will not cost you much more than 308. The days of the cheap surplus 308 seems to be over anyway.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll probably go with the LTR since I don't have time to do any reloading anymore, its hard enough to make time to shoot:(

Hagar, I agree with you they offered me a good trad-in deal but I was thinking about it last night and decided not to do it. I'll buy it outright and then sell insteaad, or put it on consignment where they take 20%.
