Remington 700 PSS in 300 Win Mag.

Well it looks like I will have my 700 PSS next week. My question is this. What does the PSS stand for? Some have said Police Sniper Special but I know that to not be true.

Depending on who you ask, it could mean "Police Sniper System" or "Parkerized Sniper System."

I always thought it was police sniper special too. Regardless, I have one and they are well worth it. ammo is expensive in that caliber though so I don't shoot it too much.

Well, I dunno about well worth it...

...when you can buy a Sendero or a VS that's mechanically the same as a PSS except from the stock for at least a hundred bucks or so cheaper.

The P is a fine rifle nonetheless, I'm partial to my 700VS though.

You'll also find that the Sendero/VS stocks are the same quality/price H-S Precision stocks as the "P" stocks...just without the extra stud, wider forestock and fatter palm swells. I much prefer the feel of the VS to the "p" models.

Yes but the 700 Sendero in 300 mag, which is exactly like the VS with a long action, has been discontinued. Add to that the fact that I'm getting the PSS for less than I can get a new Sendero and it only has 40 rounds through it and you end up with one heck of a deal I prefer yhe bigger palm swell and pistol grip of the PSS.

I seem to recall PSS standing for "Police Sharp Shooter" but I could be wrong.

Another contributor to this fine forum said that it meant Police Sniper System, and yet another opinion was that the P stood for Parkerized.
So I e-mailed Remington and asked them. Here is their response:
