Recently purchased a used Rem 7400 Synthetic in .270 Win. Inquiry to Remington customer service sez rifle was manufactured in 2004. Aware of the reliability issues with this gun, during the three day inspection period, I had it evaluated by a smith who gave it a thumbs up. Without breaking the gun down completely, I cleaned all the visible stuff, barrel and chamber thoroughly. Lubed it lightly.

Before I put any more money into it I wanted to see if it would function properly. Using Hornady American Whitetail 130 gr. Filled the magazine, let the action close. First shot fires, but does not pick up the next round. Opened the action, let it close. Chambers a round, squeeze the trigger and click, nothing. Removed the clip, pulled back the bolt and let it close again. Put the clip back in. Fired the next 19 rounds flawlessly. Got the iron sights dialed in pretty well at 50 yds. Pretty happy with that.

The question comes..... Roughly every other ejected case has a flat spot where the bullet was prior. Any idea what causes this? Is there a fix? Is it necessary to fix? Considering reloading soon, can the case be resized or is it trash?

Any/All thoughts welcome.

Thnx

I watched a Youtube video and the subject matter was: the magazine causes jams in rem semi-auto. I don't know if this video might be of help...I watched the video last summer after I purchased a 750/308.

I was not having any issues with my 750.

It's not unusual for semi-autos to beat up brass. As it is ejected it sometimes hits part of the ejection port with enough force to leave small dings in brass. I doubt if this will be an issue. If I understand you right the case will be reformed when you resize it.

It sounds like the rifle may have just needed a few rounds for break in.

Magazines are an issue with them. Make sure the mag is seated properly and the lips are not bent in and the follower is free to lift. If not damaged they do break-in. With proper lube, operation and cleaning the rifle should be reliable., Don't ride the bolt home, let it slam shut.

I had a 740 that chewed up the necks of '06 so bad they were only worth cutting down to form other cartridges. As for your stoppages I would bet it is the mag.
