Remington 742 serial number

I have a 742 Woodsmaster with a four digit serial number. I called Remington to inquire about the date the rifle was manufactured. The young lady told me that there was not a four digit number. She said they started with a five digit number, and couldn't explain why I had four digits. My question, does anyone have a four digit numbered 742?

Did you try to use the date stamp on the barrel. As long as the barrel is original it will be accurate. Not likely for it to not be original.
