It the Remington model 770 bad? I know it is cheap, but have you shot it? What kind of groups should you expect at 100 yrds? Again, have you shot it? Most reviews I've read just talk about picking it up, feeling the crappy bolt, and not buying it. I would like info from people who have actually fired it. Main question is, how accurate is it?

It's pretty close to the Rem 710, no? I own a 710 in 30-06 and it's taken 9 deer so far. Groups are in the 2" or better category, and that's from a bipod with no rear rest. I'd love to sandbag it to see what it can do. I don't benchrest or p-dog with it, so that accuracy is more than sufficient for a rifle that inexpensive (I picked it up used). The bolt feels cheap (and honestly, contains a lot of heavy lube from the factory that could use a good disassemble/scrub/relube) but it cycles and fires reliably. I didn't buy this rifle for "bolt feel," I bought it for deer. I wouldn't take it to Africa; but I don't hunt Africa. :)

If the similarities between the two are as close as I think they are, I think you'll have no worries. It works hard enough to be a workhorse.

i bought a 770 in .243 from a buddy at work for a beginner deer rifle for my wife and niece. i load it with 90 gr bullets and use varget powder. i shoot 3/4" constantly with it. its biggest fallback is the cheap stock, the bolt is a little sloppy when open but locks up fine. i adjusted the trigger down and it breaks at about a 1.5#. its better than my sps with the mark x pro trigger in it. it does fine for me for what i bought it for.

I sold one yesterday and it felt pretty cheap. The savage scoped combo you can get from most gun stores is a little nicer for similar price.

Sorry I just read your whole post and gave you the info you didn't want to hear.

Never shot the 770, but I have shot the 710 which is very similar. It was hunting-accurate, but no tack driver (it's been quite a while but IIRC groups were 1.75"-2.25").

You probably could use one to hunt and kill deer ok, but when the Stevens 200, Savage EDGE, and Marlin XL7 are out there for the same price range and are SOOO much nicer - why?

A Kia will get you to work each day just fine, but if a Nissan or a Toyota is the same price I'm not taking the Kia.

The good news: it probably won't explode in your face and it's accurate enough to hit a deer if you're lucky.

The bad news: it's the shoddiest piece of junk ever made in the US (I hope). Poorly machined, poorly finished and butt ugly. Aside from that I can't think of a reason not to own one.

Given the existence of the Stevens 200 and the Marlin XS/XL 7, both of which are vastly superior guns for similar prices, there is NO reason to even consider a 770.

Bingo! :neener:
