I read a few good reviews of the Remington 783. That model is their budget rifle meant to compete with the Savage Axis, Ruger American, etc. I've read people have had issues with their Remington 700s made in recent years. Could the Remington 783 be better made than the lower priced 700 models?

The 783 is their best effort at a budget rifle, but even with the 700's issues it is a better rifle.

i brought this cheaper dressed 700 called md 78 rem in 3006 from a friend some time ago who got it new and was going to give it to his son as a back up rifle, but the son only wanted the scope (2x7 leupold) off of it. its been hunted hard, with marks on the wood and metal but with a ex bore. and shoots every thing i,v tried into 2" or better at 100yrds. i,m going to put it in a syn stock and use it for a loaner and foul weather rifle. paid 150.00. eastbank.

I borrow the thread with a question. Do you consider 700P LTR to be higher quality than a standard 700? LTR have a more expensive stock than say sps, but is the action/barrel better made?

i think you can buy one with more flash and dash, but underneth it,s still the same model 700. IMHO, eastbank.

The Remington 700 has a reputation that will be extremely hard to beat by some new design. No matter what it wears a 700 is a 700 and it is the action most are after.
Eastbank got a very sweet deal on the rifle. The action alone is worth that. Some bedding work and maybe free floating and it may surprise you as to what it can do.

700 SPS are still selling a lot of rifles. I dont think there is anything really wrong with either. The 783 is a Savage rip off.

One thing I don't like about the budget rifles is that the ejection/loading port is very small. Makes it much more difficult to single load a cartridge or clear a jam.

The ejection port can be smaller because these budget rifles have detachable magazines. They are assuming you will load the rifle with the magazine.

Same here.

Some claim the small ejection port makes the receiver more solid and adds to accuracy. I'll take the full-sized port to clear out a jam.
