Don't know much about this particular rifle other than it's one of Remington's budget/entry models. I did see one on the shelf at a local store that appeared to have a walnut stock and a pre-mounted scope (Vortex, I think?).

Any positive/negative opinions on the 783?

It's basically a marlin x7. If I ever found a 783 for a steal I may buy one but I think a person can usually do much better for the same money if they look around d a bit

I see savage 11 xp's for $400 or so on a regular basis. 700 adl for $400. Howa for under $400. Ruger 77 for $500. And the american for $300 and up.

The others are solid budget recommendations, but the American is cheap. I'd take a 783 over the American any day

The Remington 783 is in the same category as the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Mossberg and TC Compass. They look and feel cheap but they are accurate and that is the most important feature. Savage 11 and Remington 700 are a level above the economy models. Probably not any more accurate but more desirable all around for frequent shooting.

Thanks for including the video test, it's a hoot. Reminds me of the three stooges.

All 783's come with the magnum profile barrel, IIRC. Probably helps a little bit with accuracy.

I wasn't aware the 783 was based on the Marlin, but it makes sense now that Remington owns Marlin. The old Marlin XL 7 had a reputation as a good shooter for a little money.
