Have always heard how many hunters enjoy hunting with a Remington 870
so I sold my Mossberg over/under Silver Onyx an bought a Remington 870
Wingmaster Magnum 12ga Pump Hi-Gloss stock 30" barrell Rem -Choke.
The gun has a good feel to it sholders up really nice . Found it for what I
thought was a good price 589.00 NIB.
Can some of you share your thoughts on how you like or dislike the Remington 870. I've read alot about the gun before purchasing it an thought
I would rather have the 870 over the Mossberg. Would welcome any comments.

Congrats! You've just become the first owner of several on that WM. They last longer than we do.

I've shot them since before Pat Boone wore out his first pair of white buck shoes. Still have my first one, just getting nicely broken in. There's four more here now.

The archives here have lots of stuff on the 870s.

Ditto that^^^!

Mine is probably my favorite gun (right out of the box) of all time. Other than where the bluing is worn on the slide, it looks as good as the day I bought it.

(My sons-in-law are planning to arm wrestle for it one day :D)

Well since it's come up, I'm looking for an 870, but what are the major differences between the models? IS it just materials? Obviously the WM has much nicer materials (wood) than the express, but are the guts all the same? Same reliability?

sillpapa That is a good price you paid for your new WM 870. You may have a problem with the WalMart Value pack shells sticking in the chamber. Some of the newer 870 shotguns have problems with them.

mojohand in my opinion a new WM 870 is not worth the extra $300 more they cost. If you want a WM look for a used one. The older WM around 20 years or older are the best ones. If you want to buy new get a Express and save yourself some money.

The internals are basically the same. The WM has a machined extractor and heavier more durable springs. It is suppose to have a smoother action out of the box but that is not always the case. The action on the 870 is not very hard to smooth out so a smoother action out of the box means nothing.

I've just bought a wing master magnun today. Secondhand but in great condition. 30" half choke barrel. Also bought a 20" slug barrel with rifle choke.
Looking forward to killing a few boar with it.

I have an 870 Police Magnum with a tube extension that I shoot clays with. Does that make me a bad person? I get some funny looks. :/

At any rate, I'm fond of my 870. It is my go-to HD longarm. Congrats on your purchase.

I liberated my '66 wingmaster from the oppressive rack of a dingy pawn shop about 2 years ago. I can honestly say between the Moss 500, 870 express, and my '66 WM that the WM gets shot about 85% of the time. I honestly believe that this gun will be passed to my grandkids one day and they'll laugh at how grandpa only paid $200 dollars for it.

The only problem with buying a used gun is that I really wish I knew it's history. Where it's been, the game that it's taken, how many shells have been through it etc.

Congrats on your new scattergun I'm sure it'll serve you very well for a very long time.

I have a Wingmaster and a Police. I use each for clay shooting and home defense. The Wingmaster is smooth as silk and worth my extra money. The Police is rugged and unpretentious in every way. I'm extremely pleased with both.
