Model 14 with Memories
I have a venerable Model 14 in .30 Rem that was manufactured in 1917; my paternal granddad bought it used in 1920 for $12. It fed a wife and 5 kids on venison during the Depression. The gun was passed to my Dad, who continued to bring home meat with it. Both of those men are gone, and the rifle is now mine.
I recently acquired a 1949 vintage M94, and now can compare the two based on range time. The Model 14 is a heavier gun, has considerably less recoil, and has a really nice action with the sound of steel and authority! The two rifles are about the same in accuracy. Unlike the M94, the Model 14 doesn't require flat point bullets; the mag tube is spiral indented to misalign bullet-to-primer contact. That tube needs to be kept clean though, or the last round can occasionally "hang" in the tube, resulting in a potentially nasty surprise.
I don't hunt the Model 14. In 2 generations, it never spoke without bringing home meat, and I am not about to break that winning streak!
