Remington Model 16, not a 22 LR?

I just picked up a remington model 16 "22 LR" semi auto. I just found an article that says it is chambered for a round that is slightly larger than a 22 LR. Anyone know anything about this rifle? Mine is not in shootable condition yet, but someday I hope for it to be. Any info available would be great! Thanks guys.

It may be the obsolete "22 Remington Special" look in a "Cartridges of the World", or Google it.

Yes, it is in fact chambered in .22 Remington Automatic.
This is not the same caliber as .22 Long Rifle.

The Model 16 was the first semi-auto .22 made by Remington in 1914.
At the time most .22 ammo was loaded with black powder or semi-smokeless powder, and black powder fouling and semi-auto's do not co-exist well together.

Winchester did the same thing when they introduced their first semi-auto in 1903. Their cartridge was called the .22 Winchester Automatic.

Both the Rem & Win .22 Automatic ammo was loaded with smokeless powder, and they were both invented to keep black powder .22 ammo from being used the new fangled semi-auto rifles.

Today, both Remington & Winchester .22 Automatic ammo are collectors items, and priced as such. It hasn't been made since World War II.

BTW: The .22 Remington Special is the same thing as Winchester .22 WRF.
It was for Remington and Winchester pump rifles of the day.
It is still being loaded by CCI, and Winchester on occasion.
