Remington Nylon 66

It was advertised as a good trap line gun when it first came out. I was running a trap line every morning before school at the time so I bought one. It was perfect for trapping creeks. I could get it wet and not hurt it. It was extremely reliable. Even with mixed ammo. Not a bench rest winner but that's not what I bought it for. Wish I had kept it.

I still have one my Great Uncle gave me when I was thirteen years old. Came with an El Paso made Weaver scope. All my friends had 10/22's that I wish I had but the little Remington shot just as good if not better than the Rugers. I looked up the code
and if I remember correctly it was made in 1959, the first year of production. It is now a cherished heirloom.

I had several in my youth and the only problem I had was when I mounted a scope it would shift poi as forearm pressure changed ever so slightly. Most shooters probably would have not noticed it though. It was the most relaible firearm I ever owned and I shot the snot out of it. After tens of thousands of rounds I finally took it apart and the feed ramp was coated with wax so I took my pocket knife and scraped it off. Never any need for oil.

Bought my very first one in 1966 at the local Sears Store for $49.95 full retail. The lady took it off the wall....it was on display, receipt says "One Gun"! Still have the rifle and the receipt, no paperwork, no serial number. Re-assembly requires two men and a small boy and even then a perfect sequence of events must occur in the correct order. There are 3 local gun shops in the county that call me for their inevitable "put it back together" jobs which also usually involves a missing small part or two. Photos show my high water mark collection, (bottom photo) then my current reduced inventory (top photo) after my daughters, sons in law and granddaughters took their early inheritances. I always keep enough parts (less stocks and cover) on hand to put 5 or 6 back together. Current Batch.jpg Old Batch c.jpg

I remember the Nylon 66 well from when I was a kid in the 1970s. I didn't own one. I had a Winchester 190, but two friends in my neighborhood each had a Nylon 66.

Here's a little trivia... the first rifle Prince Harry ever fired was a Rem Nylon 66 in 22LR. Then Lady Diana, Princess of Wales, took young William and Harry on an outing for their first experience with firearms. In the attached pic, then 7-year-old Prince Harry is clutching the Nylon 66.

“The Princess appreciated Harry’s passion for all things military and asked me if I would take the boys to a shooting range.... Harry was beside himself with excitement, it was a dream come true."

My first rifle was a Nylon 66. Unfortunately, it disappeared in one of my parents’ moves while I was in the service. So I eventually bought another one, used. After coming across this article I decided to clean it, which it badly needed.

Afterwards I called a friend who has owned a box full of disassembled Nylon 66 for years. I think he paid $20 for it. “You better get over here. I’ll only be an expert on this rifle for two more days.” We assembled his rifle in my basement, and it looks and shoots like it’s brand new.

One of these days, I'm going to have to find a Nylon 66 to shoot. To my (perhaps fevered) mind, their popularity runs counter to (what I perceive to be) conventional wisdom. They're not target rifles, but I'd have to guess at their accuracy, having never shot one. They're some form of nylon or plastic, rather than wood. TBH, they look more like a pellet rifle than a real rifle. I don't get it, but maybe I need to shoot one to find out.

I got my dads Nylon 66 - San Jacinto River sand and all after his passing.

I've broke it down, cleaned it and no issues. That reassembly was a bit of a pain but not as bad as some say. There IS a pin that you need to be careful with though lol

It sits on my display rack now, with a Winchester 94 from him and a 94 from my brother. Each get shot once or twice just to make sure. :)

IIRC it's a BRNO (CZ) 581 semi-auto 22LR with the 8-Rnd magazine removed for the photo (likely for safety reasons). Here's another snap of it. It's similar to the CZ 511, but those weren't yet in production when the photos were taken in 1992. The 581 was very popular in the UK. The outing was at the Lippitts Hill police training center in Essex.

This thread inspired me to acquire a Nylon 66 and I DID.... FINALLY!!! Paid $400 shipped and a $15 transfer fee. Can't wait to get it to the range. I love 1960's Remington rifles with the shark fin front sight. Great rifles.

Please give us a range report after receiving it.

I've had one since I was a kid.
Great little rifle.
You can make speedloaders for them with aluminum arrows.
Cut them just above the 14 round ( maybe 13?) limit,
pull the spring mag shaft, insert the arrow and all 13 / 14 rounds slide into the stock magazine.
I used damaged arrows from my Bear Whitetail Hunter.

I'll find pics later.

I have one just like yours. Bought it for the gee-whiz factor. Every now and then I take it out and fire a few rounds with it.

I got a model 66 during high school in the 50s. It kept me in beer and gas money through college shooting jackrabbits and selling them to a mink farmer for $.50 apiece.
Gave my dad the bolt action model 12 for a birthday.

Gave the 66 to my son and the model 12
to my grandson. They are still shooting today.

I'm not sure , but it looks like you could put a barrel mounted scope base for a browning semi-auto rifle on one , but would need to drill and tap the barrel. that should help hold zero .

I really don't wish to derail this too terribly, first off, to the op! Congratulations! 2nd to any experts, if there is a failure to feed on one of the 66's where do we start looking? Mag spring? Friend is asking me to take a look at his and he says it ejects fine just won't chamber the next round, using Norma tac 22. I've no experience with these so thought I'd ask around before I get in over my head

There's a good chance it's just crud, especially if the owner used oil to lubricate it.
I would try spraying some Gun Scrubber or similar cleaner in the breech to see if it helps before I started taking it apart. If you do take it apart, make sure you have an exploded view drawing at minimum.

Another member was recently kind enough to send me a copy of the factory service manual for Nylon 66. I never knew there was such a manual until he sent it. It's fairly comprehensive and might be handy to have in your situation.
I'll be happy to share a copy if you would like to give me an email address to send it to. It's about 14.2 MB.
