The eastern city sales maybe??? Portability and concealability in the bigger eastern cities by pedestrians and others?

"There had to be a reason the Colt 1849 in all it's variants was the all time best selling percussion revolver of all time."

Certainly. They began production much sooner than other designs, at at that time the alternative was what we know as a Dragoon. The pocket models built off of the .31 frame were sold nearly at the end of the percussion era, and nothing of that size was made until the early 1860's.

Why would anyone wanting to defend themselves well choose the Colt .31 over the .36 if cost and availability aren't an issue? The cylinder size sure isn't a game changer.

Colt was a marketing genius. They invented product placements among other things.

Don't get me wrong, I like Colts, but popularity and quality are only loosely related.

Well, yea but back in the 1830's and 40's and 50's through the 1860's there wasn't anything that could compete with it. And with its firepower no one at that time had seen anything like it.

They sold a lot of them because no one wanted to get shot. Being shot usually led to infection at the least. Medicine was not a big profession back then. You went to the Barber as often as not for medical advice. Being shot with anything was a problem.

The small easily carried or concealed revolvers were popular because they were easy to carry and conceal. Not everyone wanted to be identified as being armed.

"In the spring of 1867, Loving and Goodnight returned to Texas, ready to start a new drive. In a Comanche attack, he was seriously wounded at Loving Bend on the Pecos River."

The real 'Lonesome Dove" His "serious wound" was a shot through the wrist, a wound that would be easily fixed today, one shot through the wrist that later became gangrenous and finally killed him.

I agree there no one wanted to get shot.
