you don't ever NEED a retainer. it just makes it so the spring doesn't fly out and hit your eye. they're cheap though, just get one.

Sounds good, though I was getting used to the spring launching at me while disassembling the extended tube, it was really sharpening my dodging skills.

I got a magazine cap, a standard spring, and a magazine spring retainer.

I've read reports of magazine caps coming off because of no magazine spring retainer. It always happened at the most inopportune time, like as a hunter was crossing a river or something like that. The theory is that the pressure over time slowly causes the magazine cap to loosen. Without the retainer, the spring applies a force to the magazine cap that is not supposed to be there. Anyway, if your magazine cap happens to be loose because you goofed, then the force from the magazine spring would cause the cap to come off prematurely. None of this has never happened to me because I use a magazine retainer. I'm just passing along information.

The description under the spring retainer mentions it does not fit newer 870 express models, which is the model I own. It also doesn't seem to offer an alternative. Does this likely mean I just have to deal without one?

Also I appreciate the help on this, shotgun details are a relatively new thing for me.

There should be a spring retainer out there that fits your newer 870 Express. I wouldn't go without one because the ratio of price/peace of mind is so low.

The plastic spring retainer won't work on the your shogun because it doen't have mag tube dimples. The dimples hold the spring retainer in place.

If it has the detent on the barrel ring you need a mag cap designed for the detent. You will also need a spring. I would go with a 40" extra power Wolff universal spring. Cut it to 24" for long life and reliable feeds. Shape the ends so they don't stick up.

You could just cut the spring you have to 24" and it would work also.

Mag cap and extra power spring is all you need.

Thats all you need. You're barrel should have a little ball detent on the top of the ring (if it's an 18" defense/police model), the Remington cap has corresponding teeth. They come loose by recoil and vibration only. The old spring pressure thing, hogwash. Putting positive pressure on a screw keeps it in place, just like a split-lock washer. Get in the habit of checking your choke tubes and magazine cap periodically and you will never get suprised by dumping you mag tube. If you are really a cheap a$$ and want a quick bit of insurance, put three wraps of teflon tap around the threads of the mag tube. It will take up the windage in the threads and make for a tighter class of fit. You will have to re-wrap everytime you take the cap off though, and you might see some of the tape if you get sloppy with it.

This is completely correct, no dimples in my mag tube.

Also correct, my barrel has this spring loaded plunger/detent.

Thank you for the information. I think I'm good to go on this one now.
