I bought some cast minies and many of them are coated with a stubborn layer of lead oxide.
I thought that there might be a solution/mixture to help dissolve it. When my kids looked online they told me that there was a patent issued for lead oxide removal.
The patent said to spray with water and then brush with an abrasive.
Doesn't that sound ingenious?
I'm soaking them in some water, but what kind of an abrasive? Baking soda maybe?
I guess that I'll need to use a toothbrush unless someone has a better idea.
If someone has another method that works, then maybe it can be patented too.
One response has advised to re-cast them.
But I'm not sure if it's because the lead oxide can damage a bore, is not worth the effort, impossible to remove or all of the above?

Have to agree with Gary, why bother removing it, shouldn't effect them any. If you really feel the need though, try some of that CLR (Calcium, Lime, & Rust) cleaner they advertise on TV.

I seem to recall that WD-40 can be pretty effective, although I may just be remembering that it is supposed to be effective at prevention rather than treatment. Should be easy enough to find out, at any rate...

Gary has it... as do others..

Now if you need to have something for show, at a local dog and pony show, then by all means clean up 10??

Sometimes i do that dog and pony show for hire, and all I do is take walnut brass media and dump some and the lead into a pail and shake it a while. My pail is a older paint bucket unused, so it is a tad rusty on the outside. This is older and has a wire bail. A coffee can would do the same if you added a wire bail.

Of course with lead being so dangerous as it IS these days, I hold the lead in my hand only, and no longer pass these leathal objects around as i once did.

Ain't gonna hurt nothin' shootin' them oxidized...I prefer them that way. Them Yankee Snipers can't see um shine when I'm reloadin' ... nor can the Condors come down and try to take um from me here in CA... they don't eat lead these fools out here think they do. Hell they're jus' overize Turkey Buzzards. HeeHee!

These are the left over Tracer rounds I made... jus' stick some powder in the wax lube and they'' smoke for 200-300 yards.
