Retrofit Sights to a Mossberg 590

I have an older Mossberg 590 with the brass bead sights. How hard is it to get better sights added? Like a ghost ring rear and a fiber optic front?

A friend had a 500 with a fantastic set of sights. It had a ghost ring rear, two fiber optic dots in green on either side of the ghost ring at 3:00 and 6:00 and then a red fiber optic front (perhaps the colors were reversed front to back but you get the idea). I offered to trade straight up and give up the capacity, the heatshield and the bayonet lug for those sights but the thing belonged to my friend's brother and he couldn't do a deal.

Anybody done such a retrofit? I wouldn't expect to do it myself. I'd find a gunsmith.

Its not hard at all to get better sights added, its simply a matter of time and money. Any gunsmith worthy of their name should be able to do an install of the sights you choose as its a relatively basic procedure if you have the tools.

If I where to do this my first step would be to find the sights I wanted and price them on the internet. If you like your friends sights then see if you can locate the same.

I would then go to a gunsmith and see what the price is for installation and price of installation with sights purchased from him. Find out if he can order the sights you want, if not you can buy them yourself. Find out what his turnaround time is, some gunsmiths are very busy and your barrel can languish in their shop for months if you simply drop it off without agreement to have it back in a timely fashion. If there are a couple smiths in town you may want to find out who has the best service and turn around.

PS. Get it done ASAP since gunsmiths get real busy in late summer with hunting season opening coming up.

Having done this personally myself about six years ago, my personal advice is to sell the 590 you have now and buy the 590a1 you want. It will end up costing less money than trying to modify the 590 by putting on the desired sights.
