Though I like them both, my choice would be the Model 686 Plus. The seventh shot is a "plus" and I much prefer the Smith's trigger pulls, both sa and da. Finally, and utterly subjectively, I much prefer the looks of the Smith.
I think S&Ws have "classic beauty lines" especially the standard barrel models, but the heavy barrels are good too.
And the trigger IMHO is much better.
The Ruger is tough as a tank! Unless you abuse it, you'll never wear it out.
Used? I love both - and I'd get both.
New, the Ruger wins out due to it's heavy construction.
I just bought a 686-6+. It's part of the Talo distributor exclusive 3-5-7 Magnum Series.
Look it up. I got the 5" barrel model, and I absolutely love it. Traded a 6" Taurus 66 in on it, and won't look back. Excellent trigger, the weight is nice, and it's accurate as you could ask for.
...although I will still probably get a Ruger eventually. One gun is not enough gun. =D
Gonna pretty much reiterate what most others are saying here. You can't go wrong with either one. Get the one that feels the best. If you can find a place where you can rent both (I would suggest in the same barrel length) and try them out, all the better. I have had both. Prefer the Ruger DA trigger, but the Smith definately is a little better in single action. However, I have found that triggers don't mean much to me if the revolver does not balance well for my hands. That's just me though. Good luck! They are both great revolvers.
