Revolver or semiautomatic

I dunno, my last purchase was a S&W 27-2 5" in excellent conditions, impeccable bluing, I've put 105 rounds of .357mag through it, feels like home. Much better model than the M28s we were issued decades ago. :)
Before that, a SIG 365 XL (12+1 and 15), about the size of a S&W Shield and it conceals better than Glocks.
Just put Tru Glo night sights on a gen3 G17 to replace worn out XS night sights.

To answer the OP's question, hard to beat older S&W .357mags in very good condition.

If I suddenly had extra cash...

Something I really liked, didn't already have, and could get a great deal on.

Right now a good top-break revolver, a Contender, a 10mm semiauto, and a revolver in 40 caliber are all sort of on a list.

Revolver! Because the gun I want right now is a revolver.

It is a 10 shot .22LR revolver. It looks like it would be a lot of fun. I have another .22LR revolver by the same maker and enjoy it a lot. No ammo pickiness like you see with some .22LR autopistols and it's great trigger practice if you shoot it DA.

I'm a revolver( Python, M29) guy but a nice full-sized 1911 in 45ACP would get me thinking. I never go in search of a semi-auto, it has to find me. But I do go out of my way to shop revolvers though.

My entire collection has moved from revolvers to 1911s after dealing with "bulletproof" rugers piss the bed with issues, so more 1911s and more contender barrels is my answer.

Revolvers are not a preferred carry gun for me.
What would I buy? I'll answer from the perspective that I don't own these pistols already, or might want another.
10 round mag limit: Glock 26, 27, 30SF, or a 1911 (Glock 29SF if you handload)
No mag limit: above list but now also includes Glock 19, 23, 22, 21SF (Glock 20SF if you handload)

I would choose a semiautomatic for multiple reasons.
1. My first handgun experience was in the Corps where my primary weapon was an M1911 for 8 of 10 years. Obviously I became quite accustomed to it. During that time I never so much as held a revolver let alone fired one. I have nothing against revolvers. I just have never wanted to learn the drill for a new type handgun. I am quite confident in the reliability of good semis.

2. In Nam I learned first hand how important fast reloading was. While I suspect some people can reload a revolver as fast as I can reload my semis it goes back to relying on what talent I have developed over the years. I have made my PLS M2 a house gun. I now EDC my LCP2 with 7+1 and two additional 7 round magazines in an IWB pouch. I feel confident that it will reliably get me through any SD situation. So it is Semi for me.

If you were going to buy a new handgun would you buy a revolver or semiautomatic? And why would you choose that particular handgun?
It would depend on what it's intended purpose is!!! And it would depend on the level of training/expertise the individual had I was buying it for. They both have their place in the real world. That said, if I were limited to just one hand gun it would be a S&W Model 66 4 inch. ;)

Haven't read any other post but depends, doesn't it, as to why you want it? Some have crossover, like my G26, I EDC but also shoot it a lot.

I bought a G17 as a range gun. I also bought a Uberti/Beretta SA Bird's Head as a range gun. My son's have a mix of G17/G43/G45/Beretta92s/Ruger GP101/Uberti 45LC/S&W 686/7

I hear ya. I have revolvers, semi's etc. but my favorite Plinker is the LCR22. And I think, if and when we do get to shoot again, Ammo will be short supply and have big stock of 22.cal. So, thinking about a LCRX in 22.cal. I like sitting back after training with revolver and just plink away at clay targets at the 50 yd Bern. The LCRX will hone things up a little.
Just ordered one of these.

The next thing i am actually going to buy is a revolver. Its a remington conversion replica proof housed for .44-40 nitro cartridges and coming with a second cylinder, the initial blackpowder one.

Why? Because i want to have it ...

Doesn't matter OP... But what you want to carry and not what we think you should carry... Opinions and philosophies will be all over the place on here....

I would depend upon what I intended to use it for.

I do not need a new firearm right now.

Considering my recent purchases I’m gonna say revolver, but since I just got 4 of those I would lean more towards one of the semis that I have been looking at. There are some recently discontinued Tanfoglio products that are going pretty cheap recently for what they are. No they aren’t cheap, but they are well built guns and with the discounts I was seeing before I bought the revolvers it made me question which way to run.

Great minds think alike. The .40 revolver would be a convertible for me is the only thing I would add/change.

the original question is a loaded one. Hunting, home defence, target, plinking, concealed carry?
Why are you looking into them? Assuming for yourself, but what are you going to do with it?.
Historically for hunting the most powerful and appropriate cartridges (depending on game), that is .357 magnum, .41 magnum, 44 magnum, etc. all were revolver cartridges. Indoor target shooting or league shooting would usually be .22 rimfire, .38 special or .45 ACP. That usually was done with a semiautomatic.
Concealed carry or home defense could be anything from a very compact .380 acp semiauto or snub nosed .38 special revolver to whatever you wanted. So, first what do you think you want it for (which isn't quite the same as what you think it actually would be used for). Safety wise for a first handgun, most agree the ease of clearing and visualizing a revolver gives them a beginners edge, and many instructors would suggest a soft recoiling and mild reporting round like the .22 rimfire or .38 special for range learning /practice, as well as being inexpensive to shoot which means you are likely to shoot more frequently.
There are a lot of opinions on the subject, listen to them all and don't get influenced by TV and media favorite guns.
