I want a double stacked, double action, steel framed, .40s&w that doesnt have rails... thiat is NOT a sig, bersa, CZ, EAA, 1911... gotta have a barrel length between 3.5 and 4.5 in... and if its got a manual safety, it's gotta be on the friggin frame... And it has to be in production...

pretty sure it doesnt exist... if it's recently out of production, I'll consider it

Closest I can think would be Beretta 8000 (Cougar) D config, but that's aluminum framed, not steel.

Ruger SR40 ??? Guess it does have a composite frame

No, wait --how about a CZ ? Ok, that was ruled out at the start.

Kahr MK40 ?

got this fear of hammer bite... also... no .40's on the website...

Beretta 96 Steel is as close as I can come to meeting your specs off the top of my head. I don't know if it's currently in production, but if not, it's been made fairly recently. Slide is wider than your spec and the barrel length is a little longer than your requirement.

those were the few I considered... but there really isnt anything that meets my requirements... will probably pick up the first one I see... a couger... or a hi power...

You understand that the 96 Steel is a totally different gun than the 96, right?

Steel frame, not aluminum. Frame mounted safety, not slide mounted safety. Straight grip frame, not the curved 96 grip frame.

Whichever I find first. There really isn't anything that meets the reqs. Correct me if I'm wrong...

If you can compromise on a single requirement, I can come up with something, but with all of your requirements, I got nothin.

I know that you aren't looking for this answer but if you want a decent pistol, you're going to have to be less picky. There are TONS of reliable and sturdy pistols out there with poly or alloy frames but most of them don't meet every requirement that you listed.

While not a true double action, take a look at the S&W M&P40. It was built from the ground up for this caliber and are available with a thumb safety.

Not picking a fight and not hijacking, just honest curiousity. Why is a slide mounted saftey/decocker such a deal breaker? I've heard others voice similar complaints but never heard anyone say why. My first pistol was a S&W 459 and it served me well for the past 26 years so I am trying to understand the dislike. Do you prefer the cocked and locked angle or do you feel like it gets in the way of racking the slide? Enlighten me.

The 96 Steel is about as close as you're going to get.
  • "double stacked"---Yes
  • "double action"---Yes
  • "steel framed"---Yes
  • "40s&w"---Yes
  • "doesnt have rails"---Yes
  • "NOT a sig, bersa, CZ, EAA, 1911"---Yes
  • "and if its got a manual safety, it's gotta be on the friggin frame"---Yes
  • "barrel length between 3.5 and 4.5 in"---Barrel is 4.625"
  • "has to be in production"---Nope. Of course, neither are any other guns that meet your specs.
The slide width may be a little thicker than an inch, but you said that was a plus, not a must.

The Cougar has an aluminum frame, a slide mounted safety and a slide thicker than an inch, IIRC.
The Hi-Power is single-action and has a barrel that's 4.64" long.

I guess it depends on which of your specs you consider most important.

All these responses and no one suggested the ORIGINAL gun chambered for the .40 S&W, the Smith & Wesson 4006. While the safety is slide mounted, there are variants that are either DAO (4046) or has a frame mounted decocking lever. (4026)

All steel and should be around $350-$400 on the used market.

Forgot to exclude Magnum Research... Hate how they stamp "Baby Eagle" on everything they import... And it's a cz clone. Already excluded them. Thanks for the help, guys... Also considering the S&W 4026, if I can find one... And in responce to plan2live, just dont want anything on my slide... Just grip serrations. The safety goes on the frame... It's just where it should be. lol Also... Slide safeties are usually backwards... Up should be safe, down should be fire... Maybe I've been shooting 1911s too much. :p
Already compromised with the "in production" requirement. Would consider an alloy or aluminum framed handgun... But I'd rather have something with steel. Like the Berretta or high power...

Yup ,The 4026 comes pretty damn close to your requirements and has the frame mounted decocker. Rare indeed. I think they were only made for two or three years in the early 90's. If your interested I know where there are a couple for sale. PM me.

Kinda hard to find something when you limit yourself to nothing.

My thoughts exactly.

While I can think of a couple, I feel this thread is a silly exercise with no real point. Who has those configuration requirements and automatically precludes the three most viable candidates from their list?
