What is the effective distance for a 20ga and 12ga rifled slug? I couldn't free up the money for a slug gun this year so I'm stuck with a smoothbore.

I think with good sights or a low power scope (you can get a scope mount for most of the common shotguns) it could be plenty accurate for deer out to 50ish.

Most folks with most smoothbores equipped with a bead sight are effective out to 50 yards once they find a good slug matchup.

Lots of Eastern deer are hit at ranges well within 50 yards. If you NEED more range, go to iron sights or a scope.

Went to the range today and Remington 5/8oz Slugger HP's worked the best. The Federal Tru-Ball were all over the place which I didn't expect.

Take two identical shotguns with consecutive serial numbers. Try a given slug in both. Chances are the results will differ greatly.

Keep trying slugs. You'll find one your shotgun likes...

If you don't have the funds for a rifled barrel shot-gun, then you aren't going to like the prices of the sabots.
I have the youth model 870 combo for my daughter and between trying different brands and settling on the HORNADY SST.......
It's cost around 150 bucks easy to get dialed in with a new scope and all....but
that thing is dead nuts on out to 50 yds and I'm sure it would go out further with no problems. I only need 50 yds where we hunt.
The ammo claims ballistic zero @ 150 yds and 1800 fps at the muzzle
$9.52/box online.
