Just thought I'd show some photos of my latest modification to my already modified Zastava MP22 in .22 WMR.

I modified a picatinny rail blank to mount on this gun to replace the red dot I could no longer focus on with a "scout" type scope.

Full detailed report is expected.

I can report how it came to be. It has always been an excellent shooter.

I bought it new in 2012 as a full length .22 WMR sporter rifle. I scoped it and kept it that way for some time. I refinished the stock almost immediately though as the rough "dipped in oil" finish was lacking.

In the winter of 2014/2015 I decided to modify the Zastava MP22 to suit my wants. I cut the barrel back to 16.25", crowned the muzzle, installed a Marbles front sight, fit a Williams WGRS-54 sight to the receiver, shortened the LOP by 1/2", and added ammo storage internal to the butt stock.

Not long after that, I mounted a red dot onto an adapter I fitted to the original rear sight mount on the barrel.

I can't focus on red dots so well anymore, so I modded the rail shown in the first post to fit the barrel. The original rear sight left a scar on the barrel, so that was largely the reason I modded the forward rail to mount the way it does.

I happen to have already owned that discontinued Simmons 2x pistol scope (7732M1) for my 9.5" barreled Single Six. However, the eye relief was really too short for handgun use being that it starts at 9" on that model. So, a $50 scope plus a $14 picatinny rail blank and lots of hand tool time give the results as it stands today. :)

What's tucked in the elastic stock sleeve?

2 spare 5-round magazines. I can squeeze all 3 mags in the sleeve if the gun needs to be carried without a mag in the receiver.

In the photo with the red dot, it was a double pack of batteries and L-wrench for the red dot.

The sleeves are two common butt cuff ammo holders. I just cut the loops off the outer sleeve. The inner ammo holder loops serve to lock the mags in place by catching on the floor plates.

Excellent work, looks like a nice handy little rifle.

It is a little rifle and feels pretty good in the hands. It's no flyweight though, due to the quantity of metal and wood throughout.

The specs after the modifications are:
Overall length = 34.25"
Barrel length = 16.25"
Length of pull = 13.50"
Weight fully outfitted as seen in the "Scout" photos with 3 magazines and 33 rounds of ammo = 7.0 lbs.

The original factory claimed specs are:
Overall length = 40"
Barrel length = 22"
Length of pull = 14"
Weight (no optic, no sling, 1 magazine) = 6.5 lbs.

That in my opinion is nearly the perfect weight for a carry 'round .22. lighter is nice to carry but harder to shoot, especially as the guns get shorter.

I think something around 6 pounds fully laden wouldn't be too bad either. I bet a Ruger American Rimfire rifle given the same treatment as my Zastava would be around 6.25 lbs fully laden. :)

I love the Altoids tin and fuse box ideas!

My plan was to do something similar with my .22LR American but a .22Mag would also make a great survival rig. I was going to remove this full rail (that's backwards anyway) and install a single base in the front along with Tech Sights.

The Tech Sights with that red dot would be great.

Just a bumpski to my old thread. The 2x20 Simmons just wasn't enough magnification for my .22 WMR rifle.

So, it now wears a 4x28 Weaver. Much better all around. The only thing this Weaver gives up to the Simmons is up close focus. The Simmons could focus on a target as near as 7 yards. The Weaver works better at 10 yards plus.

Chicharrones, not sure how I missed this one the first time around, but WOW! That is some awesome work! I love the .22 mag for a general desert/mountain/varmint rig. I have shot untold 1000's of 22 Mag in the past many years. I love your rifle and set up. It looks well balanced and 100% functional. Thanks for sharing.

It's my little sweetheart rifle. It took some effort to get it there, but it's there now. :)
